DH and I are going to Port Huron for the day on Friday for some cheap clothes and Olive Garden fix! Any tips from people on where we should go for men's women's clothing? We're just going for the day, not overnight. I have heard that border crossing guards are generally OK with a spend of about 100/each- is that true? Has anyone claimed alcohol before and paid duty on it? TIA!

I am a big fan of Kohl's and Macy's for clothes in Pt Huron. I go about once a month to Port Huron for a day trip. Typically if we keep our total to about $100.00 each and only buy one case of beer between us, then we normally do not have to pay duty at all. But this past week I spent $120.00 including a case of beer and I had to pay duty on everything. Costs: $80.00 for sheet set, $5.00 one sheet, $20.00 beer, and $6.00 bath and body soap. My duty was $28.00 total. By the way, the beer was $10.00 duty/tax. So even if you have to pay duty it is still a rather good deal.
Let us know how your shopping trip goes. Have fun.

I have family in MI so I am a frequent visitor at the border and I think it really depends on border officer that you get... I usually never have a problem and I buy lots but every so often I will get pulled over and have to pay hst on everything I have, no duty charges but sometimes they will get you for the hst.

DH and myself were in Port Huron two weeks ago and had great success...go on line and sign up for the Kroger card and download their coupons = great savings. Also, we came back through Marine City 20 minutes south of Port Huron and picked up 60's of vodka for $11 plus $22 duty on Cdn side...the nice thing is you take a ferry back across the river and it's so relaxing...enjoy!

For the Kroeger card, do you not have to have an american address? If not that would be awesome. We are ehading to Bristol TN in 3 weeks and would love to do some shopping

You can get a Kroger card right at the store at Customer Service, just takes a minute or 2. It doesn't matter if your Canadian or not and there is no cost to it.

Thanks everyone! We'll definitely hit Kohl's and Kroger. We'll see where else we venture to tomorrow.

I have the Kroger card (got it year's ago) but when I try to download the coupons, it wants the address "they" have on file... I've tried the only two places I've lived and it wont' take either.. Is your card registered to your home address here in Ontario? Maybe I should just get a new card...

My Krogers card is registered to my home address here in London. I have never tried to download their coupons, as I always thought the card automatically deducted of the coupon (re:Kroger sale price) for you at the check-out. I could be wrong though, does anyone else know?

We had a fab trip today!! We went to Chilli's for lunch and partaked in the $20 for 2 lunch (yum!), then we got some great deals at J.C. Penny's, TJ Maxx, Payless, Kohl's. I definitely liked Kohl's the best- beautiful store, lots of selection, it's like an upscale Winners. The prices were good, not great, but good. It's nice that there are lots of well-prices options in close proximity to one another. We hit Olive Garden for dinner, really good too! We were also happy with the cashiers everywhere too. We had coupons for J.C. Penny and Kohl's, and they were accepted happily (what a difference!). No probs crossing the border, we bought about $250 all together, and we didn't have to pay any duty. We'll be going over regularly!
