Thread: Queen Alexandra - Bottle Theft
-

Morning, I just wanted to give everyone a heads up in the Queen Alexandra area for recent bottle theft.
Outside on my deck right beside my back door, I keep a garbage can to recycle my cans. When it gets full I empty it and put my empties in the garage to return to the depot.
Two weeks ago I wake up to find my garbage can in the ally completely empty.
Yesterday, my DH caught the guy going into someone’s garage stealing cans down the alley. He stopped the car, go out, and told the guy to go you know where and told him if he ever saw him again he was going to call the cops. This thread is currently associated with: Garage

This happened to my friend in Mill Woods. Her neighbor saw a woman go into her backyard and swipe a ton of empties (her yard is fenced). She called the cops and they said they couldn't do anything! The woman ended up coming back into the neighborhood and they had it out. She left $10 and some change in the mailbox for the bottles (my friend estimated they were worth over $30).
Such a joke.

That is ridiculous. My back yard is fenced also. If he is going to to people's garages, there is more then bottles he can take.

That is very unfortunate that someone is resorting to stealing empties. It is not right, but at the same time if someone is desperate enough to steal bottles and cans I figure they must really need the money.

You are probably right, but at the same time these things are still other people's property. It is the principle. I get it that they need money, but so does everyone else. We all pay the deposit on these bottles.
There are legal ways to get help (Food Bank is the first thing that comes to mind, along with many government programs).

Lot's of people survive by going through the trash and alley's looking for bottles everyday. Totally not cool to be going into people's yards and taking them, but I really don't care if they take them once they are out at the curb for recycling - just like people on here might do with coupons. I just leave my bottles out by the dumpster in the parking lot of my apartment building for people to take, they disappear quickly. What unnerves me is when I sometimes see people in nice cars driving up and taking them. I guess it's first come first served, but when I have a feeling the person doesn't need the money it kind of bugs me!

We had three big bags go missing from our back step last year(Ottewell). We had left them outside as we had problems with fruit flies when they were downstairs.
We now keep them downstairs and take them in more often as the bottle depot is close.
We keep the garage locked as d/h has tools and stuff in it but what bothered us more than the theft is that our kids were in the house when the thief snuck up to the back door and took them.
I know alot of homeless carry a knife for protection and it is scary that if surprized what might happen.

When I lived in Vancouver me and my roomie at the time always heard a noisy dumpster diver late at night, so we decided to leave bottles right next to the dumpster so he would be quiet. Soon a couple more people followed suit. just thought I'd share
it is a shame they are going into a private yard, I would feel violated, even if I would have just given them the bottles if they asked.

I've had about 6 bags taken from my fenced in back yard (with dogs!). Not cool when this is one way my 7 year old makes his pocket money.
I'm no longer couponing and my dogs have passed away. I can't figure out how to delete my profile. Sorry for the inconvenience.

My car is pretty nice. Im well groomed. If I saw a big back full of bottles beside the dumpster I would move faster than Ben Johnson on steroids to get them into the car. The thing is....you shouldnt judge me because even though I may appear as though I do not need the money...I need it more than you know. So...where's your building??
