How does the gift card thing work? Can I buy a $50 gift card and get 10,000 points with their birthday deal today?

No you would just get regular points for purchasing the gift card, so if you purchased $50.00, you get 500 points regular. No bonus points but if you are making a purchase any way, why not buy gift card for a few extra points.
For the birthday deal bonus:
Excludes prescription purchases, Shoppers Optimum® Mastercard® points, products that contain codeine, non-pointable items, tobacco products (where applicable), lottery tickets, stamps, transit tickets and passes, event tickets, gift cards, prepaid card products and Shoppers Home Healthcare® locations.
