Have a lawyer draw it up if you're paranoid. It will cost a few bucks but it will protect you. The law is trending more and more towards finding long term relationships create a shared asset situation. In particular, if you buy a house together some day, make sure you have an agreement setting out who gets what if you part. I hope the guy understands.

Federal law does not govern unless you are married. Provinces differ regarding common law relationships, which is why a do it yourself agreement is not a good idea.
