Bussing around the states is certainly safe, though it is quite inconvenient. The bus trip itself will likely take longer than the 26 hours you have mentioned in your post when you add in all the waiting to transfer busses. Good luck! If you needed from Montreal to WI in January I could hook you up as my family is meeting in Montreal for the holidays and my parents will be driving back to Wisconsin afterwards.

When I lived there in Missouri I took the Greyhound from Missouri to Florida to visit my best friend. It was me and my 2 yr old. It was a trip from hell to be quite honest. They had overbooked the bus I needed to transfer to and wouldn't let me and my son on. I had to sit and wait for almost 5 hrs in the bus terminal in the middle of the night in the worst part of Memphis, Tennessee. I was pissed! Because of that error on their part my whole trip went from taking 20 hrs to over 36 hrs. It was miserable. So I would definitely expect it to take awhile to get there. I will never ever take another bus anywhere LOL!

My husband used to live in Chicago so I am an expert in travel there lol. Take Porter. Seriously. O'Hare airport is a disaster because it's a huge hub. Delays and lost luggage. Porter Airlines flies to Midway which is the smaller domestic airport. One time I stood in line at customs with only 10 other people and they were all on my plane! This airport is on the south side of the city, Wisconsin is in the North, so you'd have to get yourself to the bus station but Chicago is so transit friendly you'd have no issue.
His dad took the Greyhound back to Toronto once and the bus got held up at the border in Detroit (which is a pretty busy crossing, Sarnia is a ghost town). Good luck

Umm...Detroit crosses to Windsor.
And I'm not quite sure how you consider Sarnia a Ghoast town.
OP - I think you've had the best adivse already.
If you can afford it flying is your best option.
I would say take the train over the bus.
But then Detroit - Chicago on the Mega bus sometime runs for $10 each way. I've had a few gf's take it & its just over 6 hours.Get free gift cards for amazon & paypal. I've earned $100's with the click of my mouse!

Yes, Detroit crosses into Windsor. You have to take that bus from Chicago, get off at the border crossing in Detroit, and continue on the same bus from Windsor to Toronto.
And the border crossing at Sarnia is a ghost town. We crossed there many times and had no lines. Lots of lines because of truckers in Detroit.
I'd go back and forth from Chicago once a month with all forms of transportation and the plane was the best.
No need for you to get testy and rude when I'm trying to help the OP. Merry Christmas to you
