Tipping Question - Hairdresser

I have a hairdresser that I have been going to for a few years. I have always tipped generously. Now this person has her own salon and I am going next week for the first time to her new place. As she is now the owner, do I still tip?

I still tip. I know some people don't if it's an owner but I feel if the service is good, then a tip is warranted.:-)

Same thing happened to me...except mine started her business from home. I still tipped bc I wasn't sure..and she is great so why not.

Same thing happened to me and I still tipped because she's still providing the service that I'd be tipping the next person for.

I would still give her the tip but my MIL had this happened and now won't tip. I think if she's a good hair stylist you should.

i have heard before that if it is the owner, a tip is not required.

that sort of makes sense, but in all honesty i don't know myself what i would do.

if you really feel like it, offer the tip. your stylist might refuse the tip if that is in fact the industry norm.

surely there must be a stylist on SC to give you some input!

I don't tip my nail tech as it is her own business. She pays herself. I don't feel the need to make up part of her wage. I do tip my hairdresser, as it is not her own salon.

i always tip my hairstylist $10, he does an amazing job on my hair each time.
its the one thing i never cheap out on.
He owns his own salon, works crazy hours, and always spends 2 hours on my hair, and gives me a family friends discount to boot!

I tip my hair dresser $20 when I get a cut and colour. Since she now works from a salon in her house the price has dropped amazingly so even with that $20 tip it is still half price to the going rate around here.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I think I will continue to tip - she does a fantastic job and since I have always included a tip I am used to that being part of the price.

Tipping is not a requirement. Unless youre in a high class restaurant, or having a function catered, then tipping or gratuity is added to the bill, which I disagree with. Tipping should be based on the quality of the service given. If your hair stylist does a great job, sure throw her a tip as a way of saying thank you, who cares if she pays herself or is the owner, shes still giving you a good service is she not?

I also followed my stylist when she started her own salon, and yes, I still tip. Maybe a bit less, but I'd feel pretty weird not to, really. Her service is the same, even better I'd say because she went from a very big salon (20 stylist + many colour technicians/assitants & hair washers) to a small 3-4 stylists place, no assistant. She will also tip out the other girl when it happens that they wash my hair, rinse my hair while she's busy and they're free (or when her sister helps out on Saturday). I like not splitting the money myself, and then I don't feel like I should give her the full amount + extra for the other person.

I tip between 10-15%, but with her prices, it's still quite a lot!
