I shop mainly on bonus point days and regularly bought SDM GCs before purchasing anything so I could get double the points. I started shopping smarter at SDM in January 2010 and I believe I hit plus status by early summer, so roughly 6 months. Some people do it faster based on their weekly purchases.

I always buy gift cards and usually only shop on 20X (or better) events since my SDM is a 1/2 hour drive away. I just reached plus status the first week of December. But now I am good for any plus promos that come up next year. Right now it is hardly worth it since we don't get the kickback of points at redemption but you never know what they may come out with next year.

The first year you get plus it probably makes more sense to get it early in the year (if you can)since you have that status for the current year and the next also.

My spending picks up near March. That's when birthdays and other occassions arise. I think I will try the GC method next year.
