Long story short, my dad, who is 55 is losing a 4 month battle with brain cancer and he's currently in the hospital. Mom has not left his side whether it was treatment, taking care of him at home, surgery etc. She has devoted every second she has to making sure that he is happy and so she hasn't had any time for herself. In total I've taken about 6 weeks off work, done numerous drives from my place (Ottawa) to theirs (Stoney Creek) and am now on compassion leave to help her as she doesn't drive and was spending a fortune on cabs to get to the hospital.
Well Saturday night after we left the hospital I took her to the mall because she had been upset that her 'winter' clothes looked old... We ended up @ Smart Set and the lady said that if we spent $75 she'd give us $20 off... how could we not take that deal? Mom ended up buying 4 really nice sweaters (all the same, but different colours lol) that were $19 each! She kept saying the whole time... 'Can I buy myself things right now?' I just kept yelling YES YES YES!!! haha.
After Smart Set I took her to SDM for the redemtion as we had $250 to spend
She was hesitant at first but I just kept saying to her 'Just get whatever you want' We ended up purchasing some very random things but the whole time mom was saying 'This is so fun' haha.
What we bought:
2 blow dryers (lol.. one for each of us)
Wallet for mom
Scarf for mom
Makeup for both of us
Quo brushes for both of us
A comfy pillow for dad
Fancy clutch for New Years (Mom insisted.. though I have no plans lol)
Cheese (haha)
Carry case for my kitty
aaaaaaaand a lot more random things. In total we had to pay $37 in taxes!!
My initial plan was to finish up my Christmas shopping but I think taking mom out to splurge on herself was the better way to go

That's the best review I've read in a long time! Remember to take care of yourself too during this trying time.
I enjoyed the review because it's not about "stuff" - it's about life.Last edited by janelcd; Mon, Dec 6th, 2010 at 10:34 AM.

Sounds like you two had a great time. My FIL passed away a year ago now after a 10 year battle with a brain tumor. It's been rough, but it does get better. Good for you for taking care of your mom and yourself.

It is incredibly sad what your family is going through, but your mom probably enjoyed having this shopping trip with you. A small break from the reality both she and you are facing - it was probably appreciated by your mom more than you know.
Thumbs up, and hugs and prayers to you both. The average dog

Sorry to hear about your dad. I am sure both your parents are proud to have an awesome daughter like you. Charity begins at home, and that was kind and generous to share with your mum not just the money/points but the time, energy and ensuring her well being during a difficult time. Good work and WTG!!!

Your parents have raised a kind and caring daughter, hope my DD grows up to be the same.
