bumping b/c I updated.
Gonna have to plan me a trip to the USA!
Awesome tips, thanks!
I'd also like to add: if you're staying at a hotel and have booked a couple weeks / months a head, ask if your hotel will hold parcels for you.
My friend does this all the time when she's going to the US! She shops online a lot - most US sites have FREE SHIPPING.
Have it shipped to your hotel under example: "TO THE CARE OF: JOHN SMITH" and once it arrives, they will keep it safe for you until you arrive.
Awesome!
really awesome,thanks!
Go to the corner store & ask if they sell Detroit weekend newspapers. These are the ones with all the coupon inserts (every week) in them! If I know I'm going over to Port Huron to shop, I pick up a paper & clip the coupons to take along.
Keep your limits to around $100 per person in the vehicle, with no one item being over that amount & you should be ok to pass through Customs without paying HST. Basic groceries, vitamins & pet food are tax free just as they are in Canada...but add in personal care items, junk food/pop & you are subject to HST on those items (just as you are in Cda).
Be careful bringing fruit as some are restricted.
Fertilizers with weed killer & pesticides arent' allowed so leave them behind in the USA.
If you plan to buy alcohol &/or tobacco, bank on being pulled in for taxes. Hard liquor is about $1 an ounce MORE in taxes ON TOP of what you've already paid & cigarettes are about $50/carton to import, again ON TOP of what you've already paid. Beer is still a deal at around $12/case of 24 (regular size cans/bottles). **Dont' let the Duty Free stores tell you that "you can bring it back" ... of course you can...but once you arrive you'll be greeted with taxes owing that the DF shop worker didn't tell you about. They just want to make a sale.
To avoid bridge traffic, check online to see the Border wait times entering Canada at http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/bwt-taf/menu-eng.html.
Also check the US Border Patrol site http://apps.cbp.gov/bwt/ for wait times entering the USA.
Being that summer is creeping up on us, the wait times will be getting longer & more unpredictable so plan accordingly. NEXUS is a good thing...look into it if you cross frequently!
That's it for now! Happy cross border shopping....PS...be nice to the Customs officers....they have a job to do as well ;)
Thanks! Hope to go soon! :)
