Artist Allen Sapp died yesterday at the age of 87; he would have turned 88 on Jan. 2.

Allen Sapp's art is a window to life on the reserve as it was when he was growing up in the 1930's and 1940's. Many of the scenes have disappeared from current reserve life.
Allen Sapp's paintings depict the struggle for survival by a proud people in a harsh environment.

Born on the Red Pheasant Reserve in north central Saskatchewan, Sapp’s artistic talent brought him fame at home and abroad.
In the mid-1960s, he moved with his family from the reserve to North Battleford.
He would just walk downtown, try to sell his paintings for people - for $5 and less.
(NOTE: at a fine art auction in Edmonton this past October, his paintings went for $2,000)
One day he went into a medical clinic to see if any doctors would buy his paintings - and there his fate changed. He met Dr. Allan Gonor, who became his patron and support.
After a showing at the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon in 1969, Sapp's work became known across Canada, and the world.
By 1974 Allen Sapp had found commercial success and had attained widespread attention. He had been the subject of a book Portrait of the Plains by then Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta, Grant MacEwan. His life and art was also the subject of a CBC and a National Film Board documentary
In December 1985, Allen Sapp was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (R.C.A.A.).
On December 5, 1985, Allen Sapp became one of the first eight recipients of the Saskatchewan Award of Merit.
In January 1987, the Governor General of Canada appointed Allen Sapp an Officer to the Order of Canada as a means of recognizing outstanding achievements and honoring those who have given service to Canada, to their fellow citizens or to humanity at large
He also was recipient of lifetime achievement awards from the Aboriginal Achievement Awards and the Saskatchewan Arts Board. He has also received a honourary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Regina.

The former Carnegie-built North Battleford Public Library was converted into an art gallery in 1989, with Sapp's paintings, The Gonor Collection, being the mainstay.

RIP - Natalie Cole, legendary songstress, dead at 65
Cole died Thursday evening at Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles due to complications from ongoing health issues, her family said in a statement.

With a very heavy heart our family and community grieve the loss of Mr. James Loader. Who was he? Only the most popular ticket taker at our local theatre. For a few years my " tall " kids struggled to prove they were still allowed to get in with a kids ticket and it became a running joke. We just started bringing their birth certificates to avoid any disagreements.
We got to admire and love this man for his dedication to his job and the kindness he showed his patrons. He had such a way about him.

For 55 years James Loader greeted movie-goers at Morningside Cinemas. His watchful eye and friendly chatter were as much a part of the place as the screens. But last week, the longtime usher ripped his last ticket.
Loader, 83, worked his last shift at the theatre on New Year’s Day. He died peacefully in his sleep over the weekend and was discovered by his family on Jan. 3.
“We are devastated by the loss of James Loader, our loyal usher at Cineplex Odeon Morningside Cinemas who was part of the Cineplex family for nearly 55 years,” Ciniplex spokesperson Sarah Van Lange said in an email. “James was not only a legend with our team, he was also a legend with the Scarborough community as a whole.
“He has a lasting legacy and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts go out to James’ family and loved ones as we mourn his loss.”
Tributes flooded a 1300-member Facebook page dedicated to Loader Monday as news of his passing spread.
Colleagues and patrons alike heaped praise on the affable usher, remembering him for his strong work ethic, his quick humour and his friendly manner.
“So sad to read this news...all my years in Scarborough Mr. Loader has been an integral part of my childhood and adulthood,” theatre-goer Steve Slavi Kasan wrote.
Co-worker Jason Chavez recalled that “James wouldn’t miss a day of work” commuting through snowstorms to still arrive early for his shifts.
Loader’s daughter Patricia Lalonde told CP24.com her father was known in the community at large as an ever-present staple who held a place in the hearts of those he met.
“It’s crazy, it’s just crazy the outpouring,” Lalonde said. “I mean, he’s a legend. Anybody who lived in Scarborough, or worked in Scarborough or grew up in Scarborough – everybody knows him.”
Lalonde couldn’t say exactly how many tickets her father had ripped over the years, but estimated that it would be ‘many, many thousands.’
Shy by nature, Loader was a movie-fan who liked action movies and loved his job at the theatre because it gave him a chance to interact with the patrons, she said.
“He always told me it kept him young and that’s why he continued to work,” Lalonde said. “He loved the young people. He just loved chatting with people as he took the tickets.”
No funeral arrangements have been made so far, but Lalonde said the plans will be made public when finalized so that the community can pay their respects.

Back in the day, there was a show called One Day at a Time. A single mother raised 2 teens. One was Valerie Bertonelli (Hot in Cleveland). The custodian/janitor for their apartment building was Schneider. Pat Harrington who played Schneider has passed away. Age 86.
