I'm working on a breakdown of prices for a couple items, but I am wondering if anyone knows the price for these items offhand.
Borax, Sunlight BAR soap, A&H washing soda.
Those are the ingredients I use to make my own liquid laundry soap, but rather than run around looking for the best prices, I'm hoping to see if I can squeeze even more savings in.
I do know that a 2kg box of Borax is on sale at Home Hardware right now (50c savings), and as you can imagine, these items do not go on sale often, nor have I ever seen coupons.
Thanks in advance!
**Just to note**
2kg Borax @ HH is on for $4.47 (reg $4.99) (8 cups - recipe uses only 1/2 cup)
3kg Washing Soda - $7.29 @ HH (13 cups - recipe uses only 1/2 cup)
2 bars Sunlight bar soap - $1.99 (1 bar per batch)
The recipe I use makes approx 3.5 gallons of soap (56 cups), and you only use 1/2 cup per load (I have an HE washer).
So basically if I use those prices above:
One 3.5 gallon batch (13.5 L) = $1.83 / 112 loads (56 cups using only 1/2 that per load) = $0.016 per load of laundry
It smells awesome though too

Wish I could give you an idea about prices but I have no idea what those things go for. I'm just in love with you're post cause my hubby works at HH and gets 10% of everything. Do you have a link to share with the recipe?
Thanx

Actually, it's pretty easy - I make the liquid version & there are probably a zillion videos on youtube for it.
I use 1/2 cup borax, 1 cup washing soda, 1 bar sunlight soap
4 cups boiling water in a pot on the stove
Add grated bar soap, stir until melted
put 3 gallons of hot water into your 5 gallon bucket
add the soap mixture & stir
add the borax & washing soda - stir well
pop on a lid & let it sit for a full 24 hours
After 24 hours give it a good stir (it will be a gel before you stir), separate to jugs & shake the jug a bit before pouring out your 1/2 cup for the washer.
I found this video on YT for making it - her recipe is opposite mine (and just about everyone else that makes it!), but the method is the same

As I was out & about, I had a mini hunt.
Walmart sells Borax @ $5.00 for 2kg, they do not sell washing soda, or laundry soap bars
Loblaws sells Borax @ $5.99 for 2kg, they also do not sell washing soda or laundry soap bars.
Edit to add: Just made my next batch of fabric softener - 4L for under $3 (using regular price). This batch is lavender, but I'm going to try several different scents over the next few months to see if there is something else that I like besides the one smell.
My recipe is 4L vinegar with 25ml of essential oils. The vinegar at Walmart is $1.97 for 4L & the essential oils are $1 per 25ml bottle.
I re-use all my old laundry soap & fabric softener jugs so nothing is wasted. It really makes a huge difference on the smell of clothes as in there is no musty, sweat, etc etc smells remaining at all, and the vinegar is great for your washer.Last edited by KrazE; Mon, Jul 23rd, 2012 at 01:03 PM.

Recently I crazliy love buying lots of gadgets from online shop, lol! Preferably with free (or very cheap) international shipping, and with heaps of crappy electronic junk.
I've been going nuts buying stuff I don't need. And I learned some clues from my serial buying.
But I want to buy more of it.

I managed to find the soda at Iga -wish i could remember the price but it started with a 6 (maybe something like 6,49??...or 6,79).
They also sell the bar soap but its 2,39
Are you sure your Walmart doesn't sell the bar as both stores near me do - its $2 for the same size you buy.Come on -Join me !

I just printed out the laundry soap recipe and wrote down the ingredients for my hubby to fetch. Can't wait to make my first batch! Let us know how the different softener smells work out. I'm not a fan of lavender. Love eucalyptus but, not sure I'd want my clothes smelling like that.
Thanx again for this awesome thread!
