I must agree that it's a really great idea. My bf got laid off after being off sick with pneumonia and if it wasn't for this wonderful site, coupons and my stockipile we wouldn't be getting trough it without filling for bankruptcy!!

Personally I think it is a very smart thing to have a "stockpile" to an extent in case of an emergency. Whether it be a natural disaster or a financial one by loosing your job I think everyone needs to be prepared.

As for the church suggesting to have it I think it might just be because they know that we may have to be self sufficient for something like 72 hours before any help can get to us in the form of ambulance or even other members of your church.

Either way I think it is a brilliant idea to encourage it.

Picking 3 was hard. But those would be mine. I have enough of the last 2 to last the rest of the year. We eat alot of cereal so I always have to buy more. But these boxes should last us 2 months.

I don't want to push any boundaries so you don't have to answer if you'd rather not, but what kind of church do you belong to, and what is their reasoning for asking you to do that? Is it part of the religion, or just something the church leader asks you to do because he or she wants everyone to be safe and secure should there be a disaster of some sort?

i believe the church is the church of jesus christ of latter day saints ( or one of the break aways) aka mormons.

they do instruct the members to have a year supply of food on hand, as they believe the end of the world is coming and that there will be many things happening to prevent people from just being able to go to the store and buy what they need, like natural disasters. most members of this church in my experience do not do this though, although the household i grew up in did, but only food items was stored. the prophet does ask that the members have it, but as far as i can tell they don't say your not gonna get into heaven if you don't have it.

Church leaders counsel members to be self sufficient and prepared for emergencies such as unemployment, disasters, and the like; it has nothing to do with the end of the world. Not everyone has a year's supply (mine is probably only 3-6 months in some things, a year's worth in others), but it's encouraged. Leaders also encourage members to have a 72 hour emergency pack ready to go in case you need to evacuate quickly. If you don't have these things, you're not punished or anything like that and it's definitely not going to keep you out of heaven!
