Opinions on moving...

Looks like DH and I are going to move. I haven't moved since I started couponing, and hoping to get some insight on how to deal with everything.

Besides being totally overwhelmed looking for a new house (we are looking for something pretty specific, which makes it even more difficult) I'm kind of freaking out about my mail!!

Of course I've ordered P&G samplers, and the new Samplesource to the current address, before I knew we were going to be moving. PLUS all the coupons and samples ordered long ago that have not arrived. Not to mention trains....

Anyway, if anyone has any advice or previous experiences they would like to share, I would greatly appreciate your comments!
I'm also sort of curious about PO boxes - I think a good idea, but not everything can be delivered to them? Any thoughts on those would be helpful also.

Depending how long it is until you move, you don't need to be too worried. Close to the date (i.e., a week or so before) if you are on any trains, I would PM the conductor and the person immediately before you to make sure your address is correct. As for freebies, etc., I am sure I missed some of the ones I had ordered last time I moved, but I just figured that it's normally something of very little value and generally not worth paying the $50 fee to get my mail forwarded. I called all the utilities, credit cards, banks, services, etc. a month in advance to tell them I would be moving October X and that following that date I would only receive correspondence at the new address. I liked doing that well in advance so I didn't have to worry about forgetting any of it. I also changed my address for save.ca,websaver,amazon,ebay, etc. about 2-3 weeks before I moved to make sure that I didn't miss anything.

As for PO boxes, I used to live in a rural area where my address specified a rural route number (i.e., RR#7) and a box number with no street address listed, and pretty much everything could be delivered to them, except for anything requiring a signature.

You might want to check with some of our fellow SCers who work for Canada Post and who would be much more knowledgeable about the in's and outs of it all...

Also, good luck on the big move! I know how much work it is and I don't envy you one bit

Well, we are about a week away from the official move....

.. and I've now realized I have gas cards, and MIR's coming to the old address.... I don't think they will be arriving anytime soon, so I'm considering forwarding my mail, even though it's $45.00

...my other option (landlords are our friends) would be to talk to them, and see if they can hold/retrieve my mail?? ....They told us when we gave notice to expect agents and possible renters to be looking at the place, and there has been no mention of it since.

What would you do?

We moved to Calgary from Ontario and then a year later, moved back to Ontario from Calgary.

My best advice is to have your mail forwarded. It's what my DH did and worked very well for us. We had our mail forwarded for 6 months until we got everything sorted out and then there was nothing left to forward.

I personally would get my mail forwarded. I did this when I moved last. Even though I thought I had contacted everyone, there were still a few I forgot, and also a few companies that didn't update right away, and needed following up.

Also available for free at Canada post outlets are change of address postcards. You still have to put a stamp on them to send them out (if you're mailing them), but they are good because you can put all your new information on them for people. I mailed some with other correspondence (i.e. xmas cards), and just handed them to other people when I saw them.
