Just wanted to warn all the traders here that Canada post employees have voted to strike if the Corporation can not come to an agreement with the union by May 24th. Apparently they can not strike while the elections are on so they have to wait but it doesn't look like there will be an agreement anytime soon.

I read this the other day in a newspaper article. I am preparing myself. I am sure many SC'ers will feel less excited if we aren't getting any mail. For me it is the highlight of my weekday.

The article I read said that a full time letter carrier gets paid $49 000 and there are new letter carriers being paid $34 000(I think)and they don't think that's fair. Something also about hiring a bunch of new people too was controversial but they said they have to due to the retired people who are leaving.

Oi this could make my life absolute hell at work. I do accounting, and rely still on cheques to pay and be paid for most of the major bills my work place has as well as the delivery of statements. While some of those are local and can be hand delivered many aren't and having to pay fed ex or purolator even at their lowest rates will be a HUGE cost.
The alternative though, being to call every individual who owes us money and make arrangements for their payments, also is very costly from a time perspective.

I tried to get hired on as a letter carrier. I figured hey, I could get in great shape and get paid for it. I love to walk, I live in a temperate climate (though I was willing even to relocate if I could get a full time post). While the pay is not awesome (really 34K is not enough to raise a family on, at least not here in Vancouver), the benefits were great. I would suspect the new people are being hired on not only at a lesser wage though but a less attractive benefits package, that's often the case in these situations.

That will be absolutely scary!!! I hope that they come to some sort of agreement with out too much of a disruption of service.
