How can shipping my "local mail" to a city two hours away for sorting, be more efficient?
For example, if my local secondhand bookstore owner does what he did last year, and send me a birthday card. (informing me of my 10% discount in the month of my birthday) Say he drops the card into a red box at oh, Sobeys while picking up a drink for himself.
That card will get picked up
Shipped two hour drive to Halifax
Sorted by machine
Driven back to my post office
Placed in my box
The kicker? The red box at Sobeys is less than half a block from the post office.
*confused*This thread is currently associated with: Sobeys

Because they would have to have more machinery and employees, which is more costly.
Love like crazy everyday and smile.

All our mail used to be processed in our city but now it's shipped almost 2 hours away to be processed. I was really worried it would have a big impact but so far it really hasn't.
Not sure of the actual cost or savings though...

I think that they only have certain places where they sort and process mail. All the mail in the 'area' is taken there. There will always be places that are far away from the processing plant, but that's the way it is.

I think it is because CP spent a gazillion $$ buying MLOCR machines. These machines are huge and only in a few locations so they have to save $$ in other places to show how great this new system is. ??? ( am I bitter? lol)

It is my understanding from our post office people, if you drop the mail off at your local post office it will not be sent for sorting but if you stop it in a red box it is all just bagged up and sent for sorting. Most small towns do not have a sorting facility and are sent to larger towns.
Depending on the year we do many mail outs the biggest one is our Christmas mail out and we send out approximately 1200 - 1500 letters and through speaking with our post office we now sort these mail out into local, within in Canada and than US and we always take them to our local post office instead of dropping off at the mail box where we pick up our mail. By doing this our local customers get their letters the next day.

tsk, tsk, go mail free, use ecards and email.
canada post is going the way of the dodo bird.
soon all they'll be delivering is junk mail.
heck, i even get my magazine subscriptions online.
and of course my coupons too.I can't profess to understand God's plan. Christ promised the resurrection of the dead. I just thought he had something a little different in mind.

Speaking from a trade point of view, I use CP daily. On average I get 15 envelopes a week just from trading and of course I mail that much also.
I also like my hard copy of magazines.
