Looking to buy an eReader and need some help

I am looking to purchase an eReader as a last minute gift for my sister..I have done a little bit of research and have found so far Kindle, Kobo & Sony..I am not sure if there are more...does anyone know which one is better and are they worth the buy??
I am seeing prices of about $88.00 to $100.00 online- is this a good price?? and it is hard to download books ?? and is it expensive to buy the books..if someone could fill me in a little I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks!!

i have tried all 3 and love kindle the best.

kindle has the most books available to it, from what i can tell. sony and kobo just didn't have much selection, and the choice of free books was minimal.

kindle has tons of free books, even ones that are rated well. obviously bestsellers and such won't be free anywhere.

you can browse each of their websites and see what the selection of books is like, if that helps in making a decision.

Many librarys also have books you can 'borrow'. You can get them from the library website so you don't have to even go to the library.

I have a sony from the credit card promotion and it is very basic but works well. I would never have paid that for an ereader. I know I was playing around with my SIL's nook and it was much nicer. Not sure the price difference though. It was colour and you could search the web and the like.

We picked up a Kobo Glo for the wifey last night, she has already purchased a book, downloaded some free books, and even borrowed an ebook from the library. It is really easy and she loves it so far

Been eyeing these as well, thanks for the tips so far. My mom loves reading but has trouble holding actual books now. With all the tech out there, I'm so lost. I'm not sure but are there phones now that load books now too??

Have an older friend who is retired, not at all good with electronics, but has a Kindle and loves it. Her grandson helped her figure it out, load books and she's just loves it and takes it everywhere.

On our android phone, you can use Google Play Store to read books, and Downloaded the Kobo app, and can use the same books from the ereader on the smartphone. Although a lot smaller

I have a Kindle that I got as a gift last year and love it. We bought a second one at SDM several months ago when they were on sale for about $80 (because DH was always using mine!). You cannot borrow from the library with Kindle. My version is fairly basic, I have a smartphone and a laptop for other things. My Kindle does have Wifi, but it uses up a lot of battery, so I rarely have it turned on. One thing I do with it though, I can email myself a text document to my Kindle - I do this with recipes and use my Kindle as a recipe book.

I bought the Kobo Glo for my Mom for Christmas. At first she hated it (one of those "I prefer paper books" people). Now she loves it, and loves it even more that I have showed her how to get books for free online.

I have the blackberry playbook. I bought it actually after having had a read quite a bit from SC members to replace a laptop that died. I really love it. It was $150. It plays my powerpoints slides...lets me edit on microsoft excell/word files. I can go on the internet...have a ton of free games and..... I can read books with it. If I were needing an e-reader I would consider a playbook personally because for 50 dollars more it does a lot more.

All depends how you want to read is what I would recommend knowing before hand. If you want to read outside in the direct sunlight, I would say an e-ink black ereader is your best option (as an lcd screen is not best for this option) If you want to read anywhere else, I'd say a Kobo Arc or any of the other tablet options would be your best choice. As it can read books and do much more.

what I love about the e-readers is you can change the size of the font - you can also change the style, but what I like to do is make the font bigger - it makes for fewer words on the screen, but the bigger letters is so much easier on old eyes!

Some folks also like to change the orientation, read a wider page rather than a longer one. I have a coworker who is visually impaired and he's very tempted to buy one, for the fact that he can increase the font.
