Congrats steph13 but be careful. All big-box gyms have a mix of pricing options. The best time to join is at the end of a month when their membership consultants are trying to meet monthly quotas. The admin and joining fees are a crock so you should ask for those to be waived. Typically the 'membership consultant' will say "I'll need to ask the manager and be right back" and then come back saying "Yes, we can waive the fees but only if you join today." Also, you can often get a corporate rate......some gyms will say "You don't qualify for a corporate rate but we have a company finalizing a plan this month and I can sneak your name onto the list if you join today." You should also get at least 3x free personal training sessions. I worked in this type fitness business in the past and their sales techniques rarely change so I have helped friends 'work the system' when buying memberships. Keep in mind that even though it is a gym, they are in the business of sales and you need to push for the best rate. On another note, all those "Free 7-day trial" cards you spot at businesses are simply a method to get you into the gym whereby you must go through the gym's standard sales pitch before being permitted to use the gym on trial.
You'll notice during the sales pitch that the membership consultant will word questions in the form that require you to say 'yes' or at least get you to agree to what they are saying. For example: "I see you'd like to have more energy. Joining the gym and exercising will help you with that, right?" from which you would instinctively say "Yes." By them getting you to say 'Yes" repeatedly over a variety of questions in the sales pitch, you are more likely to say yes when they ask you to sign up. The more you say "I don't know" or "No" the more strategic the questions become. Beware of the 'Cooling off period' after you sign whereby they say you have 2 weeks to decide if the gym is right for you and if not you can cancel. Most people do not cancel once they have signed because they would rather avoid confrontation or having to go through the sales pitch again, this why they have this built into the contract.
I hope you get a great rate and enjoy the gym. Nothing better than knowing your doing good for your pocketbook and also for your body/health.Last edited by mulock; Wed, Jan 9th, 2013 at 07:40 AM.
