    Hi,

I went to walmart today in Dartmouth Nova Scotia, to "buy" the FPC protain bars and I was charged the tax on them. I have read on other posts that tax is not applicable on free products is this right or is only in some Areas in Canada?
If is not applicable what should I do?

    Thank you for your help

Depends on how the coupon reads.

It doesn't depend on how the coupon reads. Tax is not to be charged on FPC's. Tax is not even supposed to be charged on the free product when you use a B1G1 Free coupon. Most Loblaws stores (Superstore, Zehrs, etc.) seem to be well aware of this and their cashiers have charts and instructions on how to deduct taxes at their tills. But you may still get a fight from many other stores that you still have to pay the tax.

Anne is right. Here's the thread that talks about how they are to be handled according to CRA: http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/184178-...-rules-canada/
You are pretty much always going to have to let the cashier in any store know that the taxes are included in the face value though (at the beginning of the transaction). They almost never get taken off automatically. It's easiest when the coupon actually states it, but you can also show them a copy of the CRA guidelines.

Good question. I don't tend to make a big issue out of it (accept on SC when people insist it's up to the store/cashier/manufacturer, etc and that it's wrong for us to complain even though it's the stores who are doing it wrong). I just let the cashier know at the beginning of the transaction and it's always taken off for me. I guess you could just let them know in a friendly way next time you go in so they don't keep collecting taxes twice on one product.

Taxes are not included in the face value. There is no tax involved on a free item. No one remits any tax.

Wow! I never noticed that when I read the CRA guidelines. I always assumed that the manufacturer was required to cover the taxes because of the wording on the coupons and the way it's explained in the old Ontario RST guidelines.

Bring the Walmart coupon policy too. Because it says right in there that taxes are not to be charged on free items.

That particular coupon states "Provincial Law may require the retailer to charge the applicable tax on the full value of the purchase(s) before the reduction in coupon value." I tend to stick to SDM for FPC (no tax charged there) or Superstore during tax free weekends.
