It's not if the price doesn't appear, it's if it rings in higher than the shelf price or flyer price or other advertised price. Like if the sign/flyer says a product is $2 and it rings in at $2.01, then if the store participates in the scanning code of practice the product is free (here is the list of participating stores - Zellers is one store that does not follow this policy but most big chains do). If you are in Quebec this policy is the law, so most stores most follow it (including Zellers) but there are some exceptions - I am not sure what they are, though.

If the product is more than $10 (shelf/ad price, not ring in price) then you get $10 off the shelf/ad price. So if the product is supposed to be $11 and rings in at $15, you get it for $1. If the product is $9.99 but rings in at $10.99, you get it free.

    Here is more information: http://smartcanucks.ca/canadian-code...rice-accuracy/

Note that if the item is labelled with the price, this code does not apply.

Shoppers does participate in SCOP so that formula should have been just $2 for you. The cashier is supposed to be aware of the policy and apply it when necessary but I doubt most stores encourage them to do this. I have been given SCOPs a few times before just by mentioning the price was wrong but most of the time the cashier just changes the price and I have to mention the policy myself. There should be a sign explaining SCOP near the register.

Also, I forgot to mention that only the first item is free (or $10 off) - if you have more of that item, then the price will be adjusted to the sign/sale price. But if you have say 3 different flavours and each has a different UPC, and all 3 ring in at a higher price, then all 3 would be free (or $10 off).

Oh, I absolutely agree The last SCOP I got was free hamburger buns at FreshCo about two weeks ago - I felt a little bad because there was a rather large line up, but not bad enough to not get them free!

Also, if a cashier ever gives you trouble with SCOP, and you are certain you are correct, don't be afraid to ask for a manager or write an email. I had a problem at Sobeys a few months ago when the price rang in wrong on one item. Before I paid, I mentioned the error, the cashier checked the shelf and said yes, I was right, and proceeded to change the price. I mentioned SCOP, and she said since I hadn't paid for it yet, it didn't qualify. Sorry, that's not how it works! Nowhere does the policy say you have to pay for it, just that it has to ring in at the incorrect price. I did end up getting it free, but I emailed Sobeys for clarification, asking if that is really how SCOP is applied there. The store owner called me back, saying that is not how it is done, apologized for the hassle, and offered me a $20 gift card! I was not looking for a handout (especially since I did get the item free) but sure, I took it It was the second time I had had trouble with SCOP there, so I didn't feel too bad.

If you ever feel guilty getting a SCOP, just think of it like this - they have almost certainly more than made the price of that item back from all the customers that bought it before you and never noticed the wrong price. Now that they have to give one away for free, they have incentive to update the price in their system or take down the old sign so no one else will be overcharged. But most of all, like TheSaltyDog said, it is voluntary - the store chooses to follow this code, so there is nothing wrong with holding them accountable for incorrect prices.
