Good morning SC! I wanted to share a few things that I have learned by just asking Cashiers, Mailmen and Flyer Delivery people in Toronto.... here it goes! Please note these are just one or two peoples answers to questions that I have asked over the years so some of it is opinion or fact on what the individual person does.
WALMART CASHIER
Q. Why do Walmart Cashiers take so much time reading everything on a coupon?
They get a pink slip (not one that fires them) a warning/coaching that goes in their file and if the accept too many wrong coupons (expired/wrong size) they may loose their job.
(From a SC's)they won't lose their job just because of excepting wrong coupons. too many coachings may lead to termination but it would have much more to do with overall job performance than coupons
Q. Why are some of the cashiers so miserable when I come through with coupons (yup asked this)
One girl told me that she is just frustrated with the fact that it is near impossible to get a full time hours or a promotion and also the CSM sometimes can be very rude and mean to them.
Q. What training to do you get as a Cashier?
They go to cashier training school. They learn how to spot "THIEVES". Sort of like how to do the cash and make sure no one is trying to sneak things out of the store without paying for them.
(From a SC's)training for all WM associates starts with courses on the computer (on company time) for cashiers they then move to the till to learn the specifics of their job
Q. Do you learn about PM and Coupons and using them together? STORE POLICY for couponing?
No there is no official training, its up to the CSM to train you and you pretty much follow what she believes and trained on what she thinks is important, that's why so many cashiers think different things about coupons (based on her store)
WALMART
Hi, I have this rexall coupon for $2 off Gillete Deo. Will you PM or use it as a coupon?
1st person Customer Service Desk (I asked before I went through the till, then went to checkout line in front of the customer service area) You can use it as a coupon, so that mean, 1 coupon per product. No can't combine it with $5 WUB 3. Okay - so the deod. (would have been like 50 cents happy with that)
2nd person at the cash - no we don't accept Rexal coupons
3rd person Customer service manager - yes we do accept it, but to use your $5 WUB 3 you have to have one coupon for each item.
Food Basics Cashier
Why don't you accept internet coupons?
They are so strict at head office that they won't even let clients get things for free. For example (this is what she told me) if I wanted to buy something that was on sale for $1 and I had a $1off coupon she couldn't accept it, but if I had a 99 cents coupon np. The penny makes a difference. I don't know if this true, but this is what I learned from her.
Loblaws
Can you please explain your coupon policy to me? (had it downloaded on my iphone)
She looks at it and says "I have never seen that before"
The corner store guy
Do you have to return all the paper that you haven't sold the day before?
No, just the first page, the rest of the papers are recycled
The Flyer Guy
What do you do with all the extra papers?
I keep them for about a month and then sell them for 3 cents a pound to the recycle plant.
SDM
Do you really have books and books of coupons in the back room?
(FROM A SC's) As far as i know SDM does not keep them in the back .....i know some companies have people come in and post up the coupons mostly the ones you see in automatic dispensers. This is at my store at least. Just recently we have some behind the counter because they keep falling down. If they did i have them in the back i would so be getting myself some coupons lol!!! Please correct me if you find something else out.
Questions that I am going to ask!
Can you save coupons for me?
Any other questions you want to ask? or asked... how about posting them here! I always believe if you don't ask you will never know--- ASSUME makes an A** out of U and ME... LOL

Great post! Awesome questions. I would like to know if more than one coupon can be used on a gift set, or if that is considered stacking?

that's her opinion. maybe her attitude is the reason she can't get promoted?

unfortunately this is true. this is part of on the job training and is determined by who trains you and what they feel is priority.

I worked at a shoppers for 5 yrs and the one I worked at never had couppons in the back a coupany came and hung most of them up, ones that came in prepacks / displays went to the floor with the display or sadly in the garbge if the product went straight to the shelf. But maybe some of the stores do keep them

I love those two questions. I was wondering if the Flyer Guy is the same as the newspaper guy or if the East Coast actually has flyer deliveries? Also did you ask any follow-up questions such as can I get any of the papers you don't use? I really love your attitude regarding not caring what other people think and the belief that knowledge is empowerment. Very Very Very cool. I have considered asking the local newspaper deliver what they do with the papers and if I could get any left overs or even pay a small fee for the leftovers.

The cashier training explains why I got the third degree one day at Wal-Mart. We went shopping and the kids had a Happy Meal with a Barbie toy inside. When we went to the cash the cashier kept asking if we were going to pay for the toy. I showed her the McD logo on the back and even showed her one not taken from the package which clearly said McDonalds. Never had the issue before and when we were walking away she still wasn't happy. Now no Happy Meals or vending machine toys until we leave.

The cashier at WM asked me several times if I needed to pay for the bottled water that I bought from the dispenser outside. I should have bought the bottled water from the display as it was .36 cents cheaper in the store.

Great follow up answers. Again just asking regular people doing their job! But am going to add them to the top... i love the answers that others get as well. As I said earlier, these are just the answers I get.. unfortunately did not Fact Check, but I am sure with so many others out there asking the same questions, the truth will come out.!
