I just happened across this news story, and thought we should all be happy for our neighbours in the U.S. as they can now buy and enjoy Kinder Eggs too!!
U.S They’re legal! An American version of the beloved Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs is now FDA-approved
The Choco Treasure is just like the wildly popular Kinder Surprise — except it’s actually legal in the U.S. The toy-filled chocolate egg is now on sale at Target and SuperValu.

The Choco Treasure is big enough for a whole new range of toys--squirty toys, hand-painted figurines, full decks of mini playing cards, 3D puzzles and spinning tops.
The Kinder Surprise has been Americanized.
The toy-filled chocolate egg, loved by children and adults in Europe, Asia and South America, hasn’t been allowed on U.S. soil for years. But last week, a New Jersey businessman released a new, FDA-approved version of the candy, bringing a sweet surprise to the sweet tooths of America.
Choco Treasure is Kevin Gass’ brainchild, ABC News reports. Gass, co-founder of Candy Treasure LLC., worked closely with the FDA and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to come up with a safe alternative to Kinder Surprise.
The company had to work through a number of limitations. This type of product hasn’t been legal in America since 1938, when the FDA banned manufacturers from placing inedible toys inside candy. Plus, the CPSC wants any embedded toy surprises to be safe for kids of all ages.
The original Kinder Surprises may be delightful, but they fail to pass both of these tests. Manufactured by the Italian company Ferrero, the toys inside Kinder Surprise eggs are only safe for kids ages 3 and up. Some of the toys come in small parts that need to be fitted together after they’re taken out of the egg. The CPSC believes these small parts could be choking hazards for younger kids.
The Kinder egg ban resulted in years of smuggling — around 60,000 chocolate treats were confiscated at the U.S.-Canada border last year, according to Canada’s National Post. One American couple was reportedly told by border staff that they could be fined up to $2,500 per egg.

The Kinder Surprise chocolate egg is a popular treat for children around the world, with its combination of candy and a toy in one package. Long banned in the U.S., an Americanized version — the Choco Treasure — has finally been approved by the FDA, just in time for Easter. This thread is currently associated with: Amazon.ca & Amazon.com, TargetLast edited by walkonby; Sun, Mar 17th, 2013 at 08:24 AM.

I remember some threads on here where someone was going to walk up to the border line and eat some Kinder eggs in front of them all! lol Now that person can't have any more teasing fun.

What makes Kinder Eggs fun is the itty bitty pieces that you get to put together. These sound like big one piece toys in a chocolate egg, so not much fun. Maybe the chocolate will taste better though. I can't stand the Kinder Egg chocolate!

Oh, gosh, you guys, I absolutely LOVE the kinder chocolate in the egg! My son would often give me half! What I don't like are the Bueno bars.
Now, the Kinders from Eastern Europe - THOSE are absolutely fab! My son was lucky enough to get some when he was young.

I'm with you Natalka on the taste of the Kinder egg chocolate. Mmmmmm, wah!! cannot have it anymore. When my 3 were quite young, even though I was a stickler about them having sweets on any regular basis, that was one thing they would get at Easter and Christmas.

ha ha ha my DH just asked me why were they ( Kinder Eggs) illegal in the States? DS says it was considered a danger because the Americans don't know when to stop eating! ( thereby swallowing the toy! )

Apparently Kinder Eggs are used by inmates to smuggle things into jail. Guess where they put the Kinder Eggs?
