Hi, I am just wondering what are the advantages of giving a used car to a relative as a gift.
Any ideas? This thread is currently associated with: N/AGET $5 OFF

Depends how close you are to that person..and I'm a cynical b..er...paerson..
Genuine rellies who neeed the car will accept the gift and be grateful..
Then you have those who are prepared to make the car to thier own standards...shiny, sparkly wheels for the win!!
Then you get into more toxic relationships..
"Why you give me oldcar which needs looking after??"
" I doon't want this car...whines...I want your sparkly new car....gimmme now"
If your relationship with the person is good and you are both on the same page..it's a good thing.
However, if one of you wants to use the gift of a car as a bargining chip against the other.. Craigslist or Kijiji..Keep family relationships out of the equation..both sides will be happier..
Short answer : no Long answer : NOOOOOOOOOOO!

I'm kind of with Darth Penguin, in that you better be very sure about who you're giving it to.
You want to make sure it's someone you really love and trust, and that you truly believe needs it.
Otherwise, if something goes wrong with the car shortly after they get it you could have the relative that's expecting you to pay for the repairs - and prepare to be bad mouthed for giving them a "lemon" if you don't.
Realistically, you want to know that whoever you give it to, if something goes wrong, will just chalk it up to bad luck and be thankful for the car.

Its better to just sell it and if you feel you want to help the relative , give them the money.. if the person can't afford to buy their own car , they will struggle with insurance payments, routine upkeep, registration, tires, breakdowns...
Be sure to click like and post a brag if you get the deal.. It makes my day!!! Flattery may just get you more deals
Be sure to double check your flyer, points and cashback offers~ YMMV

Over the years, we've gotten two vehicles from family members - one for us, one for our son - from two different family members.
It was always with the clear understanding that it was 'as is' - being very clear what was wrong with the vehicles, if anything.
Here in SK, you 'sell' it for a dollar so you can tranfer the registration.

I can't remember how it worked, but my mom gave me her car for my 21st birthday. I'd been driving it for 5 years anyway, and it was 14 years old at that point. I knew the history, the glitches, and what the gas mileage was. My mom didn't have to worry about her insurance on it anymore. Everyone won.
