I'm not sure about the cost, but it's usually by the day. A couple of years ago, it was around $30/day in my area. What you have to look for is the solutions you have to buy and put in the machine. Those are usually $20/bottle.

With all the work and time involved, i.e. picking up the machine, doing the cleaning, bringing the machine back, I find it's worth paying a little bit extra to hire professionnals come to my house because they're done in an hour.

The janitor in our office building recommends the ones at Home Depot. Apparently they even offer free classes on how to effectively clean carpets, stairs, etc. When I mentioned I was going to have the carpets cleaned, a coworker offered to lend me her's no charge

We rent the Rug Doctor from Home Depot. It is about $30 a day. My DH insists that he can get the carpets cleaner because he takes tbe extra time on problem areas. I find that the carpet cleaning companies that are inexpensive have many add-on charges. i.e. Every stair/step, landin costs extra. Pre-treating spots is an additional charge.

If you are cleaning a small apartment or bungalow it may be just as easy to have a company come in. If you are cleaning a whole house DIY is the way to go.
    So many coupons....so little time!

We just looked into carpet cleaning rentals in our area (Home Depot was $48 for 4 hours, $60 for the day. Other small/local stores were $50 for the day) so we decided to invest in our own.

Canadian Tire had the Bissell deep clean pet one on sale for $179 (down from $299) so we got it.

I'm very pleased with the results! DH took 2 hours last night to do our living room and it looks fantastic! All the stains came out! Well worth the invest if you plan on cleaning more than 2-3 times. Especially if you have a lot of carpet.
