I picked up a bottle of Hellman's mayo today at Wal-mart. The shelf tag said $2.97 (plus I had a $ .50 coupon).

It rang through at $4.77 so I politely stated that the shelf tag said $2.97. The cashier called for a CSM who, after phoning for confirmation, discovered that I was correct.

CSM to cashier: Okay, give it to her for $2.97.
Several years ago, before I joined SC, I would have been happy and left it at this. However, being armed with SC information, I was hoping for a better offer:

Me to CSM: Doesn't this qualify as a scanning code of practise?

CSM to cashier: Okay, give it to her for FREE.

Great call! I often wonder if the CSMs actually forget about SCOP or they purposely don't mention it when the instance comes up...

Unfortunately, I think it's probably the latter. I was at WM once when the customer in front of me stated to the cashier that one of their items was scanning at a different price than that on their shelf. The cashier called the department and punched in the correct price, not mentioning or acting on SCOP. That was when I chimed in, and informed the customer about SCOP and the fact that WM does abide by it. The cashier shot daggers at me, but the customer was all smiles, so it cancelled out

But I do have to say, I didn't find out about SCOP through smartcanucks, since my first SCOP happened before I joined. In my case, I just noticed an error on my receipt and took it to CS expecting to get the shelf price, but I was surprised to get a full refund and the item for free. This was at No Frills - still, the rep didn't mention SCOP at all, just followed it, which is good in and of itself I guess.

A lot of stores will not voluntarily mention it because most customers do not know about it or pay attention. The store wins when customers don't know or pay attention. How often are consumers aware of their rights?

It irks me that stores "follow" the SCOP, yet it's up to the customers to make them adhere to it......something's not right here!!
