We all have them with family, friends and acquaintances...
...maybe briefly spoken about them, or they are just something that has come to be...
What unwritten rule do you and friends/family abide by?

My personal rule is I don't discuss religion with my friends(because they are mostly religious). I have different views that will probably hurt their feelings and there's no need for it. If they bring it up with me I usually blow it off. We all have differences but it should not be the one thing that makes or breaks a friendship.

With my family when I was growing up, and now with our family - what personal stuff goes on or is said in our house is family info only, not to be shared with all and sundry. Nothing dark or nefarious, just private things.

We follow this rule too.
It was particular hard when my in-laws were staying with us. They would tell everybody else what was said or was happening in our house.
We also never talk about money and finances to other people nor participate in discussions about money. If people want to brag or show off we just let them. We don't like it either when relatives (especially FIL) ask us how much we paid for this and that, how much we earn, etc.

Rule to live by: Don't lend money to a friend. Don't lend money to a relative.* If you have it, give it to them -- but don't lend it. If you don't have it, just say so.
Reason: Lending money makes the relationship go strange. Especially if you think they are going to pay it back and they find every excuse in the book as to why they can't pay you back.
(Original saying = "Neither a borrower nor a lender be", from Hamlet by Shakespeare)

Rule to live by: Be a smiling tiger*. People may think that they are smarter than you and want to pick a fight with you. Don't get sucked in. Be a smiling tiger. Smile. Say nothing. Just listen. Eventually the smarty pants will put their foot in their mouth. You don't have to do anything.

What happens behind our closed doors is no one else's business. If we have an issue, we will work it out, i don't need to go blabbing about it to anyone.
also, i guess personally i don't discuss religion, unless someone has some questions about me personally. I have no hesitations about discussing my beliefs, but i don't want someone to feel uncomfortable. with half my family being staunch atheists, and myself being somewhat faithful, it could be interestingIn 2020 I had 100 FREE Grocery pickups!
