I hate Messenger. Not only is it a memory hog but it slowly fills your hard drive up with mysterious ".sqm" files.
For Windows, my absolute favourite messenger client is Digsby, it will let you add an IM account from ANY type - MSN, AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, as well as Facebook chat. You can also input your email accounts and it will notify you of new emails and provide a preview of them as they arrive.
Alas, there is no Digsby yet for Linux, so until it comes out I use Mercury Messenger. It has all the functionality of MSN/Windows Live Messenger and more. With Mercury, if you're disconnected or can't log in, it gives you a specific error message to identify what happened, as well as lets you check the server status.
