Statement by the President at the UN Sustainable Development Summit
The far-reaching Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and targets, which we declare at today’s historic Summit, open up new horizons for humanity and lay down the foundations for sustainable development of our planet for the next fifteen years.
We commend transparency and inclusiveness of the preparatory process that culminated in the Post-2015 Development Framework. More than 25 thousand Ukrainians took part in the global consultations, having expressed their own vision of the SDGs.
Working hard to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were set up fifteen years ago, our countries have considerably changed lives of millions of people worldwide.
As for Ukraine, I would like to emphasize that we have managed:
- to reduce threefold the poverty rates – yet, due to the Russian aggression, we expect this rate to drop,
- to improve the maternal health system,
- to almost halve child mortality,
- to reduce HIV/AIDS incidence rates,
- to make progress in combating tuberculosis.
We keep on working to fulfill our commitments on MDGs related to improving the quality of education, promoting gender equality, and ensuring environmental sustainability.
There will be no sustainable development without peace and freedom.
Ukraine’s bitter experience reveals that peace and freedom are principal pre-conditions for achieving the SDGs. Sustainable development is not achievable where explosions are heard and peaceful people are killed. It is not achievable where aggressive ideologies advocating suppression of some nations by other nations reign and key human rights and freedoms are violated.
Strengthening universal peace and promoting larger freedom should become a driving and unifying force behind our collective efforts towards achieving the SDGs.

The Head of State thanked for support provided by the Jewish community in these difficult times for Ukraine. “We are fighting for freedom and democracy, and we will manage to win this struggle only with the assistance of the entire world,” Petro Poroshenko said.
The parties discussed challenges of Ukraine and ways to overcome them. They emphasized the necessity of intensification of international efforts aimed to curb Russian aggression against Ukraine as a fact of violation of the international security system.
Representatives of the Jewish community assured the President of their intention to continue to support Ukraine in addressing the problems caused in particular by the Russian aggression.
According to the President, Ukraine will honor the memory of victims of Babi Yar next year. The participants of the meeting stressed the importance of commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Babi Yar tragedy to remind the world about the danger of any manifestations of intolerance, xenophobia and anti-Semitism.

Russian protesters decry war in Ukraine, several detained
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — About 200 people held an anti-war demonstration in St. Petersburg on Sunday, while about 30 people joined a similar march in Moscow to call for Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine and stay out of the fighting in Syria.
Police detained about 10 of the protesters in Moscow and two in St. Petersburg, where participants walked through the city holding blue and yellow balloons, the colors of the Ukrainian flag.
Those detained in St. Petersburg were a woman who tried to unfold an anti-war poster and a man who draped a Ukrainian flag around his shoulders. Police said only balloons and ribbons were allowed.

Protests start ahead of Putin's UN speech on Sept. 28
Protests have already begun today in New York ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin's speech on Sept. 28 at the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly, where President Petro Poroshenko will also speak.
Putin is expected to use his time to condemn Western sanctions against Russia for its annexation of Crimea and war against Ukraine, but analysts expect that Putin's focus will be promoting multilateral action against ISIS, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
Poroshenko, who is expected to speak ahead of Putin, will likely bring more attention to his call for the United Nations to cancel Russia's veto as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Putin, whose speech is expected to start about 7 p.m. Kyiv time, is also scheduled to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama later, about midnight Kyiv time.
The focus of the Obama-Putin talks is expected to be Syria, where Russia has long propped up the dictatorship of President Bashir al-Assad. But Ukraine will also likely be a topic, with Ukrainians hoping that Obama will stay firm on economic sanctions until Russia returns Crimea and ends the war in Ukraine's eatern Donbas.
Speaking to journalists in New York, Poroshenko said: "After the annexation of Crimea and aggression in Donbas, when a permanent member of the UN Security Council blocks the actions and instruments of the Security Council, we must either increase the efficiency or build new security mechanisms."
He also will press for international unity and solidary with Ukraine.
"The annexation of Crimea, aggression in Donbas, sanctions against Russia and well-coordinated actions aimed to force Russia fulfill the Minsk agreements are the first priority of all our partners," Poroshenko said.

Obama: ‘US cannot watch Ukraine's sovereignty
violated without consequences'
US President Barack Obama, scorning Russia's actions in Ukraine and warning against fighting western democratic values.
He gave a passionate speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, september 28, ahead of talks with Russia's Vladimir Putin.
The American leader condemned Moscow's decision to rip up the rulebook of international law – something which led to Washington's decision to impose political and economic sanctions. Here is what he had to say.
Barack Obama, US President: "Consider Russia's annexation of Crimea and further aggression in eastern Ukraine. America has few economic interests in Ukraine. We recognize the deep and complex history between Russia and Ukraine. But we cannot stand by when the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a nation is flagrantly violated. If that happens without consequence in Ukraine, it could happen to any nation gathered here today. That's the basis of the sanctions that the United States and our partners impose on Russia. It's not a desire to return to a Cold War."
Obama said despite Russia's and Ukraine's close economic and cultural ties, Ukrainians now wanted to join Europe more than ever.
He added that the Kremlin's decision to takeover Crimea and destabilize eastern Ukraine had a kind off boomerang effect – not just harming Russia's western neighbor but the country's progress as well.

OSCE Spots TOS-1 'Buratino,' An Infamous And Deadly Russian Rocket Launcher Now In Ukraine
The TOS-1 'Buratino,' or 'Heavy Flamethrower System,' is a feared weapon -- a 30-tube 220 mm multiple-launch rocket system (MLRS) which fires thermobaric rockets. These rockets are designed to literally light the air on fire, generating intense heat and flame but also burning all of the oxygen out of an area. This makes them extremely effective against buildings, bunkers and fortifications, and lightly-armored vehicles since it can easily kill people inside enclosed spaces.
On 26 September the SMM (Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine) observed at least 36 tanks (type unknown) at the training area in “LPR”-controlled Kruhlyk (31km south-west of Luhansk). A day earlier the SMM spotted at the same training area one heavy multiple launch thermobaric rocket system (TOS-1 Buratino, 220mm).The OSCE report says that this weapon was located in an area which is a violation of the ceasefire agreement (because it is too close to the line of demarcation and, thus, Ukrainian military positions).
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...-TOS-1_MRL.jpg
Though the weapon is clouded in secrecy, less than 35 weapons have ever been confirmed to have been manufactured, with a limited number having been sold to Azerbaijan, Iraq, and Kazakhstan. No Buratinos have ever been exported to Ukraine. So how will Russia explain that a TOS-1 Buratino was just spotted by the OSCE on a training ground in Lugansk province?

Trial of Ukrainian MP Nadiya Savchenko resumes in Russia
The captive pilot was abducted by militants in summer 2014 and smuggled across into Russia
Savchenko on September 29 told the Russian court that on June 17, 2014 - the day she was taken prisoner - she was rescuing Ukrainian soldiers wounded near Schastya in Luhansk Region.
Savchenko said she was detained at 10:30 in the morning and taken to militant-held Luhansk. Savchenko's lawyers earlier told media that they possess incontrovertible proof that Savchenko was not involved in the deaths of the Russian journalists. (that's what she's charged with)
Savchenko could face 25 years behind bars if found guilty. A final sentence is expected next month. The 31-year-old denies all the charges. The EU and US have called for her release.
