By stepping up our training programmes we are sending a clear message that we support the people of Ukraine and are firmly committed to its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.”
Last week, Sir Michael revealed the UK has directly trained over 5,000 members of Ukraine’s Armed Forces in 14 locations away from the Donbas.

The Ukrainian Institute of rice, located in south-Ukrainian Skadovsk (Kherson Oblast), has set a Ukrainian record: they grew a 1360-square-meter portrait of Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko out a variety of rice created at the Institute. This is a national record.
Only the leaves of this rice are black, or, more accurately, dark blue; the grain itself is white.
Last year, the institute set a national record by growing the largest trident, or Ukrainian coat of arms, in the country.
There are a few examples of national identity boosting which is so important to a country under attack. Taras Shevchenko is a Ukrainian poet born in in 1814 whose life was a personal fight against the Russian empire. At the time when writing in Ukrainian was an offense in itself, he spoke out against the tsarist regime and lamented Ukrainian lost statehood. Today, he is revered as one of the most important national symbols.
