Edmonton-based soldiers return from Ukraine deployment
About 40 Canadian Forces soldiers stationed in Edmonton, #Canada welcomed home Tuesday from a months-long deployment in Ukraine.
Joint Task Force-Ukraine, made up of 200 Canadians, has trained more than 5,500 Ukrainian troops in weapons, battlefield movement and communications and logistics. The most recent rotation included troops from Edmonton and Shilo, Man.

Putin critic who fought pro-Russsia rebels shot dead in Ukraine

A prominent couple who were fierce critics of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and who narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in June was attacked again on Monday. This time an assailant killed the wife and wounded the husband.The couple, Amina Okuyeva and Adam Osmayev, had gained prominence in Ukraine as committed foes of both Mr. Putin and of the leader of the Russian region of Chechnya, Ramzan A. Kadyrov.
The attack was the latest in a string of assassinations and attempted assassinations in Ukraine, which the authorities in Kiev have mostly blamed on Russian special services. The murder of Ms. Okuyeva was the second attack in less than a week.
Still, her death was sure to be seen as especially tragic in Ukraine, because she had emerged as a heroine after the previous assassination attempt.
The couple had become minor celebrities in Ukraine for being ethnic Chechen volunteers in the war in eastern Ukraine against Russian-aligned separatists. Mr. Kadyrov has publicly threatened ethnic Chechens fighting against Russia in Ukraine.
Yuriy Zykov, call sign “Shyp”, died in the war zone on December 12, 2017.
Yuriy was born and lived in Kharkiv. He participated in the Maidan and was member of the Kharkiv Self-defence Corps. When war erupted in Eastern Ukraine, he joined the army as a volunteer. Later, he served in the 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade.

Pavlo Korneliuk passed away in Avdiyivka Hospital on December 13, 2017. He was critically wounded in the head by a sniper bullet.
Pavlo was born in Murovani Kurylivtsi, Vinnytsia Oblast on May 22, 1988. Before the war, he was employed at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He enlisted in the Armed Forces of Ukraine on July 14, 2017.

24-year-old Mykhailo Kushnir was killed during an enemy attack near Horlivka, Donetsk Oblast on December 12, 2017.
Mykhailo was born on January 12, 1993 in Batrad, Zakarpatska Oblast. He served in the 128th Separate Infantry Brigade.
Mykhailo leaves behind his grieving parents, sister and two brothers.

Oleksandr Zubchenko, call sign" Zapal", was killed in heavy shelling near Maryinka, Donetsk Oblast on December 10, 2017.
Oleksandr was born in Myrhorod, Poltava Oblast on June 4, 1994. He enlisted in April, 2014 and served in the Ukrainian Volunteer Forces.

Oleksandr Tereshchenko was killed in combat on December 14, 2017 in Novoaidarsky Raion, Luhansk Oblast.
Oleksandr was born in Krolevets, Sumy Oblast. He served as commander of artillery brigade in the 58th Separate Infantry Brigade. From June 2015 to December 2016, he served in the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade, which was deployed in Donetsk Oblast. Wounded in combat. On January 30, 2017, Oleksandr signed up for military service with the 58th Brigade.
Oleksandr leaves behind his mother, sister and wife.

Volodymyr Tymchenko died from wounds in Mechnikov Hospital, Dnipro on December 12, 2017.
Volodymyr was born on February 15, 1962 in the village of Bulak, Karaganda Region (Kazakhstan). He moved to Ukraine to the village of Mokra Rokytna, Kharkiv Oblast. He was a veteran of the war in Afghanistan.
Volodymyr enlisted in the Armed Forces of Ukraine on August 16, 2016. He served as driver in the 109th Battalion of the 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade.
On November 22, in the vicinity of the village of Zolote, Luhansk Oblast, an anti-tank missile hit Volodymyr’s vehicle. He was gravely wounded and was immediately transported to Mechnikov Hospital.
Volodymyr fought for his life for two and a half weeks, but his heart wasn’t strong enough…
Volodymyr leaves behind his wife, two daughters, two sisters, a brother and a grandson.

In the evening of 18 December, the settlement of #Novoluhanske (Donetsk Oblast) was attacked from the area of occupied Horlivka with at least 40 rockets of MLRS BM-21 Grad.
National police of Ukraine reports:
○ eight people were wounded, including a six-year-old girl, who suffered from psychological trauma;
○ 50 buildings damaged including a school, a kindergarten, a rural health post;
○ a power transmission line and a gas pipeline were also damaged leaving parts of the settlement without electricity and heat;
○ more than 3,700 people live in Novoluhanske, including over 500 children.

Andriy Sypavka was killed during heavy shelling near Zaitseve, Donetsk Oblast on December 17, 2017. A 120mm shell flew into a dugout and hit the cast iron oven, which scattered into small fragments. The explosion killed three Ukrainian soldiers.
Andriy was born in Uzhhorod, Zakarpatska Oblast on June 13, 1980. He served in the 128th Separate Mountain Infantry Brigade.
Andriy leaves behind his wife and two children.

Artem Hultso was killed by a tripwire mine explosion on Decemebr 19, 2017 near Verkhnotoretske, Donetsk Oblast.
Artem was born in Druzhba, Sumy Oblast, but lived in Zhytomyr. He served as senior soldier in the 2nd Battalion of the 95th Assault Brigade. He enlisted in the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2011.
Artem leaves behind his grieving parents, wife and two young sons, aged four and one.
