Plus she's in her early 80s - so being under any anaesthetic can be really dangerous. I wonder how serious the problem with the vocal cords was.
And things can just go wrong with surgery - like with Julie Andrews after her botched vocal cord surgery left her being unable to sing - I only bring that up because a lawsuit was just settled.

Andrews, 64, who won an Oscar for her performance in the 1964 film Mary Poppins, said in a brief statement that the terms of the settlement against two doctors and New York's Mount Sinai Hospital were confidential. The settlement ends a lawsuit she filed last year in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, N.Y.
A spokeswoman for the hospital said she could not immediately comment on the settlement.
"I am glad to have settled this case in a favorable manner and am glad to close this chapter on an event which was unfortunate for all concerned," Andrews said.

"keeping her comfortable" apparently is code for nothing more they can do but anyways we will see. People have come out on the better side of comas.

Ac/DC guitarist Malcolm Young taking break due to illness
Legendary AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young is taking a break from the band due to ill health, it is confirmed.
The sad news was announced on the band's official Facebook page as they thanked their "diehard legions of fans worldwide for their never-ending love and support."
It comes after a friend told how Malcolm's illness was so serious he is unable to perform live shows.
While it was first thought the band would retire after confirming the news, a spokesperson insisted they WILL continue to make music.
The band said in a statement: "After forty years of life dedicated to AC/DC, guitarist and founding member Malcolm Young is taking a break from the band due to ill health.
"Malcolm would like to thank the group’s diehard legions of fans worldwide for their never-ending love and support.

Oscar de la Renta French lace wedding gown, hand-embroidered with pearls and diamanté accents, featuring an off-the-shoulder neckline and a full circular train.
Aside from her new platinum wedding band, Alamuddin’s wedding jewelry consisted of natural pearl earrings with square-cut diamond accents, a gift from her parents
His tux wasn't so bad either. Created by Giorgio Armani as part of his Made to Measure collection, the black tuxedo in ultra-fine wool/cashmere was paired with a white shirt, black bow tie and oxfords in smooth, brushed black leather. (To finish off his look, Clooney wore customized cufflinks, a gift from his bride, with "George" inscribed in Arabic.) Platinum wedding band.

She's 36 - he used to say he didn't want kids, but that anything could change.
The best headline I've seen:

Me, too - only can think of Wyatt Earp. There are gender-neutral names, that's not one of them.
I just don't know why parents don't think more... but hey, Jackie always wanted Kelso's baby!
