So I work at CIBC and a few months ago, my Assistant-Manager convinced me to try and apply for our new Aventura World MasterCard. I didn't think I'd get it because you need a $150,000 family income and ours isn't anywhere near that.
Well I guess being an employee sometimes pays off and I did get it! With my first purchase I earned 15,000 bonus points and over the past few months I've been saving to get up to 20,000 points so I can transfer them to Aeroplan miles and redeem them -I didn't like any of the Aventura rewards...
I checked my balance today and it was over the 20,000 points to I called to transfer my points and in a few days I'll be able to redeem them for 3 $50 GC for Cineplex!! That's another $150 free dollars just for using a credit card instead of a debit card!
WOO HOO!
(I strongly suggest anyone who wants to use a credit card to earn points only spend what you can afford to pay off - the banks make enough money without having to take yours for interest!)

Do you get the annual fee waived because you are an employee?
I had a 2% cashback visa from cibc and they had a 4% cashback visa on a promotion and the promotion was waiving the annual fee so I was like what the heck why not. So I get home and read the fineprint booklet and the 4% cashback was only on the money spent AFTER $50,000 in a year, before $50,000 it's still 2%, and annual fee is waived in the 1st year only. Since I never charge anywhere near $50,000 on my visa, that promo was useless to me and I was so upset that the person in the branch and all the banners they had in branch failed to mention the 50K thing, I actually went through the trouble of cancelling everything at cibc and moving over to another bank.

Great brag!!!
I love when you get stuff just for using a card, etc. We deal with CIBC, and I remember many years back having the Gold Visa. I hated paying the yearly fee, though. lol I went back to the cheap old, low interest CIBC Visa. lol

Wow, I could see why you would be upset! I hope you called and complained to someone about it! That's definitely not something that should be allowed. I know a lot of the new employees never know all the fine print and it's not acceptable for you to get dupped like that!

To be honest, I'd prefer Airmiles. I'd love to be able to get Rexall gift cards. DH and I don't even have passports, so I more look for rewards that we'll be able to use. DH actually gets into movies for free anyway, so the $50 dollar cards will go a long way. I might give a few of them away to friends for Christmas.
If you think you might be interested, just go to the website and check out the rewards and different card types. Also I highly recommend waiting until there is a welcome bonus incentive!
