I found this on the government's Parliament Hill website. This is a (rather lengthy) waiting list for a free flag, previously flown at The Parliament Buildings.
Send a written request that includes your full home mailing address and specifies which building's flag you wish to receive. (There is currently a 17-year waiting list for a Peace Tower flag and a 8-year waiting list for the East and West Block flags.) As a policy, only one flag is sent per household.
Send your request to:
Public Works and Government Services Canada
Office of the Minister
18A1, Portage III
11 Laurier Street
Gatineau, QC
K1A 0S5
or by fax to: (819) 953-1908
or by e-mail to: [email protected]This thread is currently associated with: N/A

I never would have imagined such a thing would be offered. I just started thinking....what sorts of things might our own government be giving away, and figured maybe as a Canadian citizen, we might have the right to a free flag - Especially with Canada Day coming up, and all.
This isn't exactly what I was going for when I started Googling - but hey, I'm not complaining either.

17-year waiting list? How often do they change the flags anyways?
BTW, do they give you a reference number of some kind? I'm pretty sure I'm going to move quite a few times in 17 years.

I asked about that when I emailed my request - I'll C&P the reply here, if I get one.

Hey, if you don't care about it being flown in Ottawa, you can get one from your representative. I think I got mine from my federal rep. It was a few years ago. I was going to South America and said it would be cool to have to show people.

Only the younger ones should get their names on the waiting list.
Flag - waiting list
How can I add my name to the waiting list for a Canadian flag that has flown on Parliament Hill?

I'm still waiting for the one Sheila Copps promised us about 10 years ago.
