We had an initial vet visit today. We have another one this evening. They believe my 7 yr old dog has glaucoma. The only treatment for this, that I can see online, is eye removal, combined with lifetime preventative medication for the other eye.
Surgery is too expensive for my parents (the owners) and likely for myself (a graduate student).

I'm sorry to hear that. I don't know anything about glaucoma in dogs, but I wish you and your family and dog the best. I greatly love all the pets we've had, and it would make very sad to know that my pet was sick and I couldn't afford to help it.
My last dog was 14 when we put her down. My parents had waited until I came home from university for the Christmas holidays. By that time she was mostly blind and deaf, and could barely move. It was heartbreaking to see her like that, but she still knew me right away, came to lay by me, and wagged her tail when I called her puppy (I always called her puppy instead of by her name).
I hope you still have a bit of time left to love your dog - and that whatever the future brings you can be assured that your time together was special. (Although what I'm hoping most is that the tests were wrong, and that your dog is going to be just fine)

Glaucoma is usually treated with eye drops before surgery. Removal of the eye is a last resort and usually on done for cancers.

Sorry to hear about puppy!! I don't know if you're are near the states but I've heard a lot of success stories going to a vet in the states, and much cheaper!! There was a show on TV about a lady that was going to put down her dog down because her vet wanted something like $3200 to fix him and she didn't have the money, as a last attempt she went to the states and was charged $250!!! Her dog is fine and she was very emotional because she almost put her dog down..it was a vey good show, maybe on the National, market place, W5..All the best!!

Although I usually appreciate blunt and to the point comments, this time it struck a nerve. I shouldn't be, but am always surprised with people on forums.
Anyway, we went back to the vet 2 times that evening, and they found that the first vet had done the pressure reading incorrectly, and that pressure in the eye is normal. Drops and if no improvement, blood testing on Thursday.

I did not explain properly - they are drops for uveitis (sp?), not for glaucoma. As uveitis is something that is usually a symptom of another underlying condition, if the drops do not fix the eye problem, then blood testing will be done to try and find an underlying.

Have your dog referred to a opthamologist. There is usually a vet who is a specialist in most larger cities.

How is your dog doing Amanda?
I worked at a vet clinic when I was in school, and I've seen many surgeries to remove 1 eye. I remember this one large lab, once he woke up his balance was so off because he now had only one eye left, he was literally walking sideways instead of straight and pulling to the side took him a while to get the hang of where he is in relation to things around him. But he did well in the end.
