Neighbours from Hell

Hi everyone,


I'm new here. I found this forum after searching for a resolution to my problem with tenants.


I moved into a fairly old house with hardwood floors in the spring. I had issues with excessive noise almost immediately involving the neighbours directly beside me. They threw loud parties with 30+ people at 3am, one time the guy was fist fighting another guy outside of my apartment at 4am and so on.


Told the landlord, she said she would evict him and he was to be out at the beginning of November. It's now mid December and he's still here.


Next up, the tenant living above me is usually very quiet and just a perfect neighbour. But recently he has moved in a woman and one or two children. The past two weeks or so. Anyway, the children are obviously very loud. I can tolerate the noise throughout the week because it's only for 2 hours or so at a time.


However, on the weekends, the children are literally running, throwing things at the floor and stomping so hard on the floor (my ceiling) that my photos and art fall off my walls. This continues from 9am until 9pm almost non-stop.


I understand that children make noise but I feel that this is extremely excessive. I have had migraines for the past several days. My significant other works nights and has been unable to sleep for work. I work from home and I have been unable to get any work done due to this noise. Also, my cat who already suffers from anxiety has been positively terrified from this ongoing issue.


We plan on moving as soon as possible but obviously this is difficult considering it's nearly Christmas and we've been unable to earn as much money as usual due to the stress and noise and being unable to work because of those things.


It's clear that we live among some disrespectful assholes. I have contacted my landlord about this newest issue but she's a joke and can't be bothered to help anyone.


So... any suggestions?

Isn't it illegal to have 4 people to a 1 bedroom apartment? I thought that would be considered overcrowding...

I'm sorry to hear that. If I were you, I can't tolerate these noises for so long time. The best way is to find a new house, which can make you have a good mood in new environment. But it can't be permitted on your condition. So telling your intolerable thing to your noisy neighbors might be the ideal way, which can make them realize that they have bothered others.

Thankfully we don't have a lease. I almost would prefer the drunk guy and his noise over this because it sounds like elephants running around for hours on end. We're all stressed and can't work, even my cat is terrified from the noise.

One idea is to sound proof your place with egg cartons - the flat square ones. They work well. Not sure where you can buy them, that's how restaurants get eggs ....since they are cardboard they might be found in recycling.
Having to soundproof your place is not ideal, but sometimes it's better to do what you can rather than relying on someone else to change the situation.

If you dont have a lease, give your notice and move. Probably the best thing for your sanity.
