Ok, so here's the situation. Downstairs in the kitchen we have a cord telephone and a separate digital answering machine.
Upstairs in my room I have a cordless phone with a digital answering machine as well....
however the problem is, when the phone rings only one answering machine picks up! and they're both set to the same number of rings!

How do I get them both to pick up? that's what I want because I keep thinking one of them doesn't work..and I want to be able to hear messages on both answering machines! (one answering machine is for my parent's and the other one is for me) because only one answering machine is picking up and saying the automatic message "Hello, please leave a message after the tone *beep*"

I never knew this would be so complicated..I just wanted another answering machine in my room...for my needs..:/

How can I make this work?

    -Thanks!

I'm not 100% sure, but i think you need 2 separate lines coming into the house. You would have to go to your phone service provider and get another line and phone number, which cost money.

    Two options...
    • Get a cell phone with voice mail. Have your personal calls go there.
    • I wonder if VOIP phones work as it's treated a second line.

Possible alternative... some service providers offer voicemail as a service where you could dial *99 from either phone and have access to the mailbox. Downside, extra $$ charge every month.

Yea, thanks guys but I think for now I'll just leave it as it is with just having 1 answering machine since there's no other way..not really worth paying extra just to have another line :/ / not sure what VOIP phone is.

VOIP is short for "Voice Over IP". I don't own a VOIP device, so I welcome others to join the conversation.

While your parents can have the landline, you can have a second number on the Internet with a VOIP device. I assume you can attach your answering machine to the VOIP device with a second phone handset.

I have been using Ooma for about 6 months now. It costs me $3.84 a month versus the BIG names that was costing me $65 a month. I also paid $119 to them, and that gives me long distance to the states and 60 other countries. I can talk and call as many times as I like. If you have a friend who has a Ooma phone in another country that is not free, it will be free. You get two line with it. All the options that I was paying for I get now for the fee they charge me a month. My phone has never been down. I get HD sound. Can use my original phones.. I cannot say enough about them.. You have to buy the unit, but after that.. cheap phone..
