Luckily my pc was saved, but the monitor got zapped. I need to buy a new one. I don't know much about monitors. I have a Gateway pc if that matters. Should I get LED monitor or LCD? Does it matter? I don't want to spend too much but still want one that's good quality and will last. Any suggestions? Thanks !

I have one of each and I don't see much difference. I would get one that fits your price range and is somewhat matte so it doesn't have a glare. I have an Asus I bought from amazon and it is very nice.

Apart from the space it occupies I agree, not much between them, except perhaps weight. About lightning - having also been struck once I now stand my computer & monitor on thick rubber mats! Insurance has gone down because of this (I am in the UK), don't know if Canada works in the same way.

No don't think insurance would give a discount for that here in Canada. I do use a surge protector for my pc/monitor. My pc was saved (thank God) but for some reason the monitor got zapped.
