They are having fewer bonus redemption days, you're right.
I have been tracking the dates since 2011. They usually have them on long weekend, and before special holidays such as Valentine's Day where people tend to spend more. Used to be roughly around Valentine's Day, Easter, Victoria Day, August back-to-school days, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, early December biggest bonus day, and regular bonus days the week before Christmas. There are also some random ones in between. There used to be about 8 of them a year.
This year so far was just Valentine's Day and April. I suspect that has to do with them giving out fewer points.
Points are essentially debt on their accounting books. Since now they make points expire, they are relief of those debt. They are also giving out fewer points, so further less debt. They are just not pressured to offer us to spend our points because they don't feel pressured to pay off the debt. Being purchased by PC group (includes a financial institution) also give them more leverage, so they can carry more debt with ease.
It is uneasy to think that retailers are trying to be banks, and banks are trying to be casinos these days...

Question 1: Can you please tell me where you find out about these points expiring? I had never heard about this before. And now I am panicking!!!!!
Question 2: I was hoping to spend my points on a Christmas gift for my DH. Does anyone know if any of the bigger shopper's (those with Eletronics sections) sell Samsung tablets?

Was reading the terms and conditions of Optimum and saw this, I know that the program has been continued in the past but am curious WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON DEC 31,2016, will Optimum continue or will PC program take its place or ????
General Information
42. The Shoppers Optimum Program will terminate at 11:59 p.m. on December 31, 2016 (the “Termination Date”).
43. Shoppers Optimum Members will have until March 31, 2017 to redeem Shoppers Optimum Program rewards using Shoppers Optimum Points accumulated up to the Termination Date. Shoppers Optimum Points will expire at 11:59 p.m. on March 31, 2017 and will not be honoured after such expiration date.
44. Shoppers Drug Mart reserves the right to extend the Program beyond the Termination Date, or terminate the Program at any time prior to the Termination Date, by providing 30 days notice in Shoppers Drug Mart store flyers and notices posted in participating stores. If events beyond Shoppers Drug Mart’s control materially affect Shoppers Drug Mart’s ability to operate the Shoppers Optimum Program, the Program may be suspended or terminated without notice.Last edited by mickey53; Sat, Aug 27th, 2016 at 11:04 AM.

I am willing to bet $$$ that PC Points and SDM Optimum will merge at the end of the year.

Do my Optimum points have an expiry date?
Shoppers Optimum Points Expiration Date
As per the Terms and Conditions of the Optimum program: "Should any Shoppers /Pharmaprix Optimum Member not acquire Shoppers / Pharmaprix Optimum Points for 12 consecutive calendar months, the account will be deemed to be inactive and all accumulated Shoppers / Pharmaprix Optimum Points will be forfeited. At that time, the Shoppers /Pharmaprix Optimum Card Points balance will be reduced to zero at Shoppers Drug Mart/ Pharmaprix sole discretion.

I agree with lecale's comment. We will be in Florida for winter so I need to use up my points before we go, don't want to take chance on losing them.

I wouldn't worry about the termination thing, I still have a paper copy from when I signed up for my optimum card (I like having the number easily available ) and under the general information section it says
42. The Shoppers Optimum Program will terminate at 11:59pm on December 31, 2011 (the 'Termination Date')
43. Shoppers Optimum members will have until March 31, 2012 to redeem Shoppers Optimum program rewards using Shoppers Optimum points accumulated up to the Termination Date. Shoppers Optimum points will expire at 11:59 pm on March 31, 2012 and will not be honoured after such expiration.
I think they just legally need to have an expiration but they just keep extending it once that date is passed

Yes, but, this time is different. SDM/Loblaws is doing just too much market research these days for the program merger to be a mere fantasy.
In another thread someone was told by CS that the program would end in 12/2016 and people would have until 3/2017 to use their points. Others called and got the usual party line instead. I am intrigued by the rumour.
Also, how could they possibly break the Optimum system so badly as they have over the last two weeks, if they were not making major changes to it?
Why have they issued offers to swap SDM/PC Points in a targeted test?
Why do they keep asking for your SDM/PC Points numbers together?
I think all signs at this point, point to the two programs merging.

They always had the end date by December 31 of the current year so....
And for the points expiracy it's just if you don't make purchases for a whole year. I think most of us don't have to worry about that

Optimum has frequent redemptions but it is spread over multiple stores which are Murale, BeautyBoutique (they shut another online system down), SDM and SDM Beauty. Now we have PC bonus redemption days too. It seems like a long wait in between when your just wanting the SDM redemption.
SDM points do expire after one year of inactivity. PC and SDM are already merging and its only a matter of time before it becomes one. I've noticed that what I buy at SDM ends up on PC personalized offers. I shop weekly at SDM and only No Frills about once every 2-3 month for items that I can't get in walking distance.

imo the optimum program has been going on for so long that they would need to give plenty of advance notice publicly before expiring points (similar to air miles). While the program still might come to an end I just don't see them springing this at the end of the year, especially since they just launched the digital app last year
