Half brag : I made it to the third interview at a company that I really wanted to work at last week but unfortunately didn't make it all the way. They hired someone within. If anyone here is out of work (or recently found employment), how are you staying positive?

I know usually the internal applicants have the advantage.

Keep trying, your self worth is not tie to material things (job, career, people, things).

ugh I hate it when they do that. Why bother interviewing people when you know you're going for the internal one anyway? This has happened to me so many times. I started a hobby to stay positive: couponing! Also, I signed up for an online course on how to be an ESL teacher. It helps me pass the time but also improve myself. Good luck! It sucks. A lot.

    Hi OP,

Sorry that you didn't get hired . . . .Its tough . . . .I have been trying to find other employment for quite some time and yes it can be extremely disheartening! For me, I try to stay positive - think of all my blessings (roof, food, my kids, spouse, family, friends, etc) i'll even list them. Sometimes we are so caught up in the disappointment we forget the truly important things!

Also believe it or not if i'm really down - then sometimes i'll also set a timer or something and give myself permission to be down/depressed/ etc. Listen to sad songs, cry, scream whatever it is. When the timer / time allotment has passed then i try to pick myself up and try again . . .We are human and its just part of our emotions . . .
    Good luck -

This has got to be one of the nicest responses I have seen on here for an OP, and really great advice

I spoke to my father and he said along the same lines ... that atleast we have food on the table. It's true and I am blessed with all the good in my life. This is temporary and I need to convince myself that I'll be hired soon.

Chin up, Sparkle. We're bound to have down days, but as everyone has said, we have so much for which to be thankful. These are some that always come to mind when I'm feeling low: a wonderful, safe country where we have the privilege of truly enjoying peace in the festive season, the promise of a wonderful future for my children, a warm home, food in my stockpile , warm clothes. I find that since I'm not in the awful rush of commuting, I notice the simple, lovely things in life. Like tonight, when my youngest son who just turned 13 came out of the shower smelling warm and lovely after using the Axe body wash I got for just pennies on the dollar. I loved that I could provide that simple comfort. Another thing I like to do is to get out in nature for just 15 minutes every day. I took my dog for a walk at the lake today. It was so quiet and calm my whole body relaxed and I could breathe and just take in the beautiful scene. Tonight, after my boys were in bed, I switched off all the lights and left just the Xmas tree lights on. Then I just sat there looking at all the little ornaments they had made and all the memories of Xmases past come flooding in. Life is good, Sparkle. The jobs will come ... there is no doubt in my mind about that. But there are definitely little joys to these jobless days. Sending you a great fat happy hug.

Take a couple of walks per week to get your sunshine quota/lift your mood or just to get away from thinking about your situation. Change your route somewhat and incorporate a recycle walk (might find coins, empties to return for deposit). If you have a dog to walk, well you are already on the way out.

Make a point of going to your local library or resource centre as part of your routine to read the newspapers, take out materials, use the computer--you'll figure out what you want to do.

Since you knew how many interviews you attended and where the hire came from, get a sheet of paper and rant about the good things and bad things about the process and outcome. Set it aside for two days, reread it, then shred it. Might help with residual feelings that could be keeping you downcast.

Agree with taking time out to deal with angry/sad feelings-they will cycle through. You will be better able to deal with them if you learn about distraction words (phrases or words to kind of stop the dwelling on that feeling when you are aware of it, so you don't go down as fast--when you make a habit of it, you can kind of limit that feeling!) or grounding techniques if you notice that those feelings visit regularly or stay too long before you are able to perk up. Wish I learned these things a long time ago but hey, life experience still brings new discoveries.

For posting on an important aspect of the employment search and asking for our suggestions--you are ensuring that you are getting through this period. Trust me, you'll find out who supports you and who is a fair-weather personality. This is how you'll roll.

I had to post again with a suggestion: I've lost plenty of jobs. Seriously. I've lost 4 jobs in 3 years. I'm only 30 years old. We had to put off our wedding. My husband had to move 8 hours drive away to find work and I was stuck here. We had some very hard times. I've thought of quitting my industry and going back to school to change careers. But I really hate school and don't have the drive or the money to go back after getting a Masters Degree (6 years of university...). I have no children to look after so am home alone every day. When I despair, I make a last ditch effort and call the competition.

Call the competitor of the place you used to work and ask for a manager in charge of hiring. Tell them that you've got this insider information for their competitor. Companies value that. They might not have work right away but they'll remember you and call you when they do a few months later. It's worked for me a few times. Hopefully it can work for you too.

In the meantime, visit family and friends (I visit my parents once a week), go out or a walk every day for a change of scenery. Go on daily grocery shops if you can rather than a weekly one. Stay in tune with reality by listening/watching the news. Email friends. Hang around the Internet.

I promise you it gets better, I just can't tell you when. I'm on my longest stretch ever of unemployment right now. There's no jobs in my industry and I'm afraid of how I will feel in the depressing winter.

I wish you good luck, and I really understand where you're coming from and hate that you have to go through it.
