I tried purchasing a Starbucks GC and a couple other things using a SDM GC and I wasn't able to. It kept saying the SDM GC was invalid (or something like that) and 2 cashiers said it was because I was trying to use it to buy another GC.

My store does allow me to do that, but not all stores do.

So just to clarify for a sdm newbie, you get points on sdm gc's only and there are BP events for sdm gc only throughout the year?
(I thought I understood then I went and bought a best buy gc and she told me I don't get points on it.)

Yes.

Once a year they have a bonus event when you get points for other gift cards as well.
