Ohhhh, I like this one!
I think it is because of where they split it intwo and how it lines up when the pieces are swapped around because of of where they are spliced and also because of the one row with third guy that never gets severed anywhere. The way they are cut and then flopped to line up again the small piece with less guy parts when in first left side position only has two in row because taken from far right where only two guys in last row. I think how they are drawn and specifically cut in certain places to looke complete no matter which piece is there is clever and maybe has something to do with how. Noticed that the row with the 3rd fellow up top that doesn't get split ends up in second column and when flopped only moves as far as second last (4th column) but the piece that slides into column that has 3rd guy when standing in column two instead of four, that piece that replaces it making second column only have two comes from the last column (5th one ) and the 4th colum portion lands in column one.Because column 5 section replaces column two section that has 3rd whole man that never gets split, that's maybe why you lose 1 guy or gain 1 guy? Clever artistry!
Errr, or maybe I'm wrong not sure??? Can't stare at this any more for now
