Expired on: Tue, Jan 1st, 2019I'm surpirsed a little there is not a thread up for Atom Tickets. They can have some really great promos on top of their everyday offer (Buy 4 Tickets, Get ONE FREE)
There is currently an offer for The Spy Who Dumped Me Movie, Until August 12th, Get a FREE ticket to the movie! (A note, it does show void in Canada, but I was able to put in the code and get a free ticket, not sure if an error, or actually valid in Canada)
https://www.atomtickets.com/promotio...ticket-weekend
It does seem, however, that the majority of their offers are for those in America, but sometimes we get good offers too (Got $5 off ANY ticket a week or two ago, paid only $5.99 AND got a point towards a FREE ticket!). And in Canada at least, it does seem that ONLY Landmark Theaters are on it, not Cineplex yet, but maybe to come? This thread is currently associated with: Cineplex & Scene Rewards

I'm actually an avid Atom Tickets user... but exclusively when I travel in the US. I can buy Atom eGift cards from Costco.com (US) at a 25% discount and apply them straight to my Atom account. The app and ticketing IS the same across the US & at Landmark in Canada... and one COULD (potentially) use the app and their loaded balance in Canada at a participating cinema (ie: Landmark).
There is so much competition in the US for theatres (I know of about 6 different theatre chains/brands that I've experienced myself, but there are at least a dozen listed in the Atom app) and Atom is one service that allows you to consolidate all of your movie-ticketing in one place. You can buy for just about any theatre brand, and it even applies your loyalty program to said theatre brand within your purchase, over and above Atom's loyalty options (although to redeem the theatre-brand points you have to go directly through the theatre)
Atom is a great means to balance the scales of movie going when I'm in the US. I open the app, and it shows me the entire list of theaters (and brands) near me that are showing the movie(s) I want to see. It saves me from visiting 4 or 5 different websites/apps to check showtimes as all of the cinemas are listed at once.
The other side of this is that many US-based theatre brands don't actually handle their own online-ticket purchasing. If you're on MOST theatre sites/apps and you click to buy a ticket, they shoot you off to MovieTickets.com or Atom, or some other site to buy your tickets. I find that curious because I'm used to Cineplex doing things in house, but that's how it seems to work there. So that in and of itself makes a service like Atom way more viable.
Unfortunately, we operate in (mostly) regional monopolies here for movie theatres. East of Quebec the only theaters in Atlantic Canada are Cineplex... save for one or two privately owned ones. (eg: the local drive-in theatre, or the 'classic' cinema.) and the rest (typically western Canada) are Landmark theatres co-existing with Cineplex. -- If I'm missing any major brands here, let me know. *(Note that Cineplex theaters include any of the following: Cinema City, Colossus, Galaxy, Scotiabank Cinema, Silver City, theatres still bearing the old Famous Players banner, and of course 'Cineplex')
However you're correct that Cineplex isnt affiliated with Atom... and it's highly unlikely they ever will be.
Love it or hate it, the Cineplex app does (almost) everything the Atom app does... but Cineplex does it all in-house meaning they have full INTERNAL control over selling the tickets, assigned seating, and being able to settle disputes. They dont 'need' to affiliate themselves with a third party company. It's also cheaper to use. In a lot of cases Atom charges a service fee for buying tickets through their app/website. Cineplex does not. Cineplex allows you to use your Cineplex gift cards and various promo codes through their website (such as those found on DVDs and cereal boxes, for example -- I'm not sure how Atom handles those codes, I havent used a US based one yet) -- and the Cineplex app is integrated with your Scene loyalty membership so you can both collect AND redeem points for movie purchases).
Landmark (as far as I know) doesnt have their own app nor loyalty program. It's probably just as easy for them to lean on Atom (not a bad decision, it IS a great app and service) -- but again, when you're the only theater brand for 1000 miles, as it is in Atlantic Canada, or you're the only "other" brand, it doesnt really matter what you do. People who want to go to the movies in this country have little choice. Giving them access through an app just makes it easier for them to buy tickets on the fly. If the theatre brand isnt doing it in-house (like Cineplex) then why NOT use Atom's service.
(incidentally, I believe you can buy tickets for Cineplex at Movietickets.ca, but they charge a service fee of $2 per ticket, so not sure why you'd bother -- which makes my point that Cineplex is doing a better-than-expected job performing this service in-house.)
Dont get me wrong, I like the way Atom does things. I have a great experience with it in the US -- just not sure our market (or at least at Cineplex) demands it.
