Thread: Energy Drinks Safe?

My multi-vitamin has:
1500% of Vit. B6
8333% of Vit. B12
and I've never had a problem. Health Canada recommendations are always changing and not really a good indicator of current research. For example, for several years, the Weston A. Price foundation had proven research of the benefits of Vitamin D3 and was recommending doses of Vitamin D in the several thousand IU, while Health Canada was still recommending 400 IU and warning that anything higher was dangerous. That was however up until recently, when Health Canada changed that recommended dietary allowance to 800 IU with an upper limit of 4000 IU. So as one can see, even though their was proven peer-reviewed journals proving the benefits, Health Canada still took years before they changed their recommendations.

800-4000 IUs of a nutrient is quite likely different than 8333% of one. That's more than a bit scary. I don't take vitamins myself, feel that those things are better absorbed from food (although most of us don't get enough that way).

Um, gonna defend Health Canada a bit
When Viagra came out, some US doctors were prescribing it left, right and centre. Some doctors weren't warning men about the heart attack risk. Guess what? Heart attack rates increased with Viagra.
At the same time, Health Canada was reviewing Viagra, consulting with medical experts and, one year later, we had Viagra in Canada. But without the heart attack rates as in the US.
So with vitamin D, the recommendations will change. But slowly.
Also the vitamin D discussion is not just Canadian, it's global. Some countries are cautious. Some countries are also taking their climate into consideration (e.g. vitamin D levels greater in countries with natural sunshine year round).
Just my 2 cents worth.

Very UNHEALTHY!! Many ppl dont know they have heart problems, drink them and many young teens drink alot of them, and kids have died. If you have a heart condition that your heart beat is out of rythm it can seriously harm or kill you. I have tachnacardia and recovered from postpartum congestive heart failure,i would not go near them. I am very strict with my 12 yr old about not drinking anything like this..

I would never touch an energy shot!
but I am a student, and have been known to drink the occasional Monster energy drink.. or Rockstar. But! I think if you are going to drink it then it is fine to do once in a blue moon. I have seen alot of students chug these thing like they were chugging a bottle of water and I think this alot of the time is the problem, people drink them too fast and there body cannot adjust to the increase energy levels. If I drink them, I sip at it over the course of the day, or over the period it takes to me to write an essay.
It gives me enough energy to do what I need to get done, no bouncing off the walls, no jitters.

It really depends on the type of energy drink you buy. A lot of energy drinks have ginseng in them which is very healthy but there are other ways to get ginseng in your diet. Bulk Barn sells a delicious Green Ginseng tea that tastes a bit like bubble gum!
Dollarama surprisingly sells an organic energy drink that is delicious! I try to avoid them though because they're all full of sugar which is unhealthy any way you look at it.Natural Giveaways - Feel free to check out my blog for more coupons, giveaway & freebies!
