Depends if you need something from each category. To spend at least $150 ($50 each from 3 different categories) for 300 am, worth $30, is only good if you can truly buy something you need.

Different people have different situations, but I'd go even a bit farther. For me, each of the three purchase would have to be a very good deal without factoring in the BAM. Every dollar more than absolutely necessary reduces the net value of the 300 BAM bonus, which isn't all that much to begin with.
So for me, this promo is pretty different from Shop the Block for example, where I spent roughly $10 more than I absolutely needed to, but where spending that "extra" $10 got me 2000 AM.

yeah, I got screwed.
used my precious $50.00 GC that DS gave me for Xmas on an amazon.ca order only to be told by AM that the order does not qualify as part of the mix and match promo because the remaining amount paid on the CC was less than $50.00.....so I cancelled both my Staples order and that one.
There are way better promos AM has, this one was not that appealing to begin with.

Well, I need one category of shop, but I would be stretching it to pay for goods in more than one. I think I'll pass. Heck, I can make up the $30+ by just mass buying boxed Campbells soups that my DH loves at Metro today. I don't know why Airmiles is making it ever more difficult to earn points. Hoops and hoops.

This is a simplification, but basically, loyalty programs need to have hoops because the easier it is to benefit from them, the more people would, which, over time, would lead to future benefits being reduced. So, as the number of informed consumers gradually increases, partly due to savings sites like SC, the programs need to add more hoops and/or to make them more difficult.
