That is a fantastic idea crispiecream! I wish my 'group' in college would have thought of that! Would have saved me thousands of dollars in Student Loans for books!

Thanks, I'm sure it's against copyrights but honestly lots of the Health Sciences students in Dentistry, Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing (my college) are doing it. Since most of the time, each year everyone is taking the same classes (all first years take the same classes, all second years take the same classes, etc) it makes it way easier! One of my classes we split the cost of the text book 40 ways, so the price was literally NOTHING... which is great. And, honestly, if you REALLY REALLY need a hardcopy of the textbook, you CAN go buy it yourself. But most everyone has tablets now... so it does work really well!

yeah, definitely illegal, but who hasn't photocopied or scanned books these days? I know I did, lol.

I have 2 children in college and I have to admit that they are fantastic with wanting to save money when it comes to buying books. I do agree that the bookstores charge crazy prices for some of the textbooks. So far my daughter has bought used books totaling $120.00 which would have cost $400.00 plus tax.

You are doing great saving money and hopefully you'll be fortunate to keep saving throughout your education. Keep it up and good luck in your studies!

I went through university buying and selling my textbooks in the university classifieds and I broke even on almost every book and in some cases even made a profit. The first year I did the whole thing where you're part of a group and you buy a textbook. go to a copy shop and make photo copies. In the end it costed more then buying and selling original copies, since you can't resell photocopies to recoup your money.

I wrote an article on my blog about getting textbooks for cheap.

I think this will be helpful for you guys...but if I'm not allowed to post this link, just let me know and I'll delete my post.

Lol, exactly, right? What SHOULD be illegal is the monopoly these publishers have over us students who are trying to better our livelihood and our community by getting a post-secondary education, only to have to buy textbooks which essentially could cost 1/4 to 1/2 the price of the actual course they are needed for.

It's ridiculous to not only have to pay for a course that could potentially cost $500 - 700 and then have to buy textbooks which could cost up to $200!! I get that everyone needs to make a buck, but c'mon. We are the future, don't rape us of any financial stability we could possibly have while putting ourselves through school. You know?

Great deals. You can also check kijiji for used text books. I've been selling mine on there although most students are asking for the next edition I still to this day have found very little variance with editions. I think its all a money grab IMO.
My friend who took the same uni course had older editions I used to study for my professional exam and I went through them and I didn't see much in terms of change.

Nice work those books are crazy expensive. And then they put another edition out the following year and want people to pay 150 bucks for them. Its insane!

Unfortunately, my college doesn't get used books all that often. Once, I purchased a textbook from them for over $100 (and this was a USED one!). I went to resell it to them, and they offered me a really low amount - like $30 - or something around that! Most people go through kijiji (which is where I found my books) and sometimes they will post ads around the school listing their textbooks. Photocopying is a great idea, I also (in past semesters) borrowed textbooks from the library and read them over for my exams.
