....I read every post. Wow...and wow again! Yes I too feel we should support OP's sis in law and use those links she posted for Metro and DelMonte to inquire. Wondering what should I say in my inquiry??
" as a member of an online coupon community and a customer of Metro I am concerned about ...etc, etc ...bla bla bla " ?
Would they take it as a serious inquiry? Hope so.

Holy smokes - Who does she think she is? That's too bad.
And I can totally see needing that many - I have a DH and 3 kids that need lunch and snacks everyday. I use one package everyday sometimes.
So sorry she had this happen - I hope delmonte sends her some great FPC's!

Those demonstrators are definitely contracted out, I have been wracking my brain for the same of another company (Mosaic?) that often offers these types of positions.
I've had mixed experiences (some happily give you lots of coupons, some hand you one and its a showdown if you want any more, and some truly don't care). However, the experience your sister had is terrible and ridiculous. I hope she gets some satisfaction.Kate

Hi jemwars,
What a terrible situation. I'm pretty sure the Metro employee's behaviour (aggressively seizing the coupons from your sister's hands against her will) fits the legal definition of battery.
You would have been well within your rights to have contacted the police over this and taken it from there. I wouldn't recommend having taken it this far, of course, but what I'm trying to say is that this Metro employee behaved unreasonably - and perhaps even unlawfully.

I absolutely agree. I am quite certain Delmonte would not want this kind of behaviour from anyone representing their product... third party, store employee or otherwise.
Unacceptable.
Hopefully your sister will realize that this was an unfortunate situation and give it another try.“Give the world the best you have and you may get hurt. Give the world your best anyway.” – Mother Teresa

jemwars, I don't blame you or your group for being upset with that person - but - I am wondering how you feel about the Metro store manager's response.
Disclaimer: I used to work at Metro, and only have positive things to say about the company. I am probably biased.
From my understanding of what you posted, the Del Monte (or whoever she works for - it probably isn't Del Monte, as Shwa_Girl mentioned) wasn't just rude - she was abusive. Yelling at your group was rude, but taking the coupons out of their hands suggests, to me, she may have been a bit unstable.
I don't think your experience qualifies as assault, but, I am wondering how far she might have escalated the situation. She yelled at you, she took coupons out of your groups' hands, then proceeded to resume yelling at you when you were ready to leave and call back about it - well, if you weren't level-headed, and instead wanted to have-it-out then-and-there, do you think she might have gone too far?
I think maybe the Metro manager was just trying to put out a fire when (s)he asked you to leave - kind of like breaking up a bar fight between a bartender and a customer (I have had to do that too). You can't be reasonable and hear the whole story; you can't try to reason with someone yelling and screaming and trying to figure out who's right and who's wrong - you just try to end the situation then and there.
I think you did the right thing following up with both sides - and yes, you were right to contact Metro about what happened. They may not have hired the Del Monte rep, but they are held accountable for her actions (which could have been worse) while in their stores.
Just considering Metro's reaction at the time - not whether you agree with the manager's decision, but rather, if you can understand how and why the manager made their decision - under the circumstances.

I guess what I was trying to say in the post above was - did the manager maybe think the rep might actually physically attack you?

Well there is no doubt in my mind this lady was more then a little unstable, and while I still take issue with him asking my sister to leave, under the circumstances I can see why he would want to try to quickly end the situation.
However my understanding of "his side" goes out the window when for one he didn't ask this "unstable rep" to leave as well. and for two not he or any one at that store has yet to return a phone call or email to try to remedy this situation and show them they are indeed valued customers that were mistreated unfairly.
I also know that like every other store Metro is covered with camera's and it would really only take a few moments of their time to review the the video and see who the aggressor was.
Now that being said I will happily post here the minute they choose to do something about what has happened, and let everyone know what they have done.
But the fact is, it now being 3 days later, I really have little faith that they intend to do anything. In fact I am really starting to believe that they have dismissed this as some greedy couponer who somehow deserved this mistreatment deserved it.
To be honest I wouldn't care if it was some one who picked up 300...500 or even a 1000 coupons. The behaviour was just wrong and the way that Metro is dealing with is even worse...that of course is my opinion, but as the age old saying goes..."ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THEN WORDS" and as of right know Metro's NON ACTION is speaking very loud and clear!

HOL-AY MOL-AY!!!! Theft?? WTH?? I guess I stole 8 uncle ben's coupons from Metro today. AND I DIDN'T EVEN BUY ANYTHING (too expensive). Muhuhahahahaha. I am so evil. Like, Dr. Evil, evil.
What the heck, does she think this is some kind of criminal mastermind activity? We're like Anonymous, taking down stores with our UOC (use of coupon) attack? Or maybe the Borg? "We are the couponers. Resistance is expected. Prepare to be astounded".
I worked retail for a long, long time. I have had bad days. I have been angry several times. I have lost my cool exactly 2 times. I have never, ever, EVER, touched, grabbed or otherwise intimidated a customer, nor have I EVER called a customer a derogatory name while on the floor (hey, what is said in the stock room, stays in the stockroom, sometimes you have to vent).
I had a Metro coupon complaint that took 4 days to get a response. The response was more than expected and highly apologetic, and my situation was NOTHING compared to your sisters. They had the store level handle my complaint, but as yours is about the store, they may just be trying to establish a strategy. I least I hope they are.
I am so sorry your sister had to go through that.Last edited by iceblueraven; Tue, Feb 7th, 2012 at 10:24 PM.
Raisin cookies that look like chocolate chip cookies are one of the main reasons I have trust issues.

I think they would have to be calling the cops if someone ripped something out of my hands!
Unbelieveable! I'm sorry that happened to your sister and brother in law, I would totally call Delmonte!

i'm a waitress, and i know that feeling very well.
that being said i have never touched a customer even though i have been disgustingly sexually harrassed on many occasions and my boss did nothing.
I do not lose my cool, but I do get rude if i'm mistreated.
If anyone was ever to touch me i would probably lose my mind.
Jem, i hope your sister gets a response. and metro should be boycotted, i have no problem with that at all. the metro on wonderland ( in westmount) isn't exactly friendly either. I grabbed a few coupons last round of tearpads and heard someone talking behind me, " oh my gosh... i can't believe that!" whether they were talking about me taking 10 coupons, I don't know, but I didn't want to turn around incase I lost it.
I will boycott on your behalf! ( or just go there, take coupons and not buy)
