I have 2 questions regarding the use of FPC's. Do you pay taxes when using them? IE I went into Safeway on 2 different occasions, I used the same FPC for the same product (duh). Once I was charged tax, the next no tax. Plus, I went to Sobey's and I used 2 FPCs and they printed out a sales slip that I had to sign and give my ph number. Is this common practice? Any help with this would be appreciated!

I'm not 100% sure but I think it just depends on the wording on the coupon. Some FPC's say that tax is included.....other do not, or they specifically say that the customer is to pay the tax. Though I have had issues where I used an FPC where tax was supposed to be included and they charged me anyway......now I always double check my receipts before I leave the store.

I have never heard of the signing the Sales Slip before but it kinda reminds me of when I would buy adult clothes for my preteen daughter and I would have to sign the PST excempt slip (darn HST so glad BC voted to ditch it good riddence)

It depends on the wording on the coupon. Some say specifically that it includes tax and others don't. If it isn't specific then you pay tax. Cashiers have a lot of trouble with this sometimes so if it includes tax I'll ring it in as a separate transaction so tax doesn't screw up the amount. There was gum a while back where it the purchaser had to pay $0.10 after tax. That was really hard for some of the cashiers.

I updated a post earlier today about that same thing at RCSS. I emailed them to check and was informed that it was considered stacking....which isn't allowed in Ontario.

According to Canadian law, you are not supposed to be charged taxes for FPCs. Here's the thread that discusses that law: http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/184178-...-rules-canada/
I'm not sure why more stores are not aware of it, but I've found that in actual practice, you are more likely to be charged for them than not. I don't argue with cashiers about it because it's not usually worth the time and stress. But when the coupon says taxes are included in the face value, I always point it out to the cashier and they always take them off. Some stores also are supposed to take them off automatically, according to their policies. Zellers has it written into their coupon policy. But the store closest to my house doesn't take them off while another store near me always does. Walmart had it written into their policy at one point, but I'm not sure if they still do and I've never had a Walmart cashier take them off automatically. Some cashiers in Loblaws stores (at least in Ontario) will take them off, some won't. Shoppers Drug Mart used to have a code that would take them off automatically. In Ontario that code no longer takes the taxes off, it just ensures that we don't receive Optimum points for products purchased with FPCs.

I find that cashiers don't read the fine print, so stores where they manually enter in the price, they do not include the tax. (eg. Walmart, Zellers...) However, at SDM they have a FPC button on their screen, which doesn't charge you tax.

Mmhmmm I try to use my FPC's (where the item would be taxable) either at SDM where i will not be charged tax, or a Loblaws umbrella store, as Loblaws is well aware that tax is not to be paid on FPC's. In fact in this area most Loblaws umbrella stores provided cashiers with charts that show the amount of tax to remove at every price point, and instructions on how to remove it.

I registered a complaint with Safeway about the BOGO and FCPs. The VERY NEXT day, they had all my Sunlight at the customer service desk waiting for me. No questions asked. The district manager said that it was not stacking as the BOGO was a storewide sale and not a Sunlight event. SO THERE SAFEWAY!!
