do you think abortion is wrong? or does it depend on the situation?
Boo - you SURE you want to start a topic like this? It's pretty loaded, and it's going to make a lot of people angry with each other.
I hate to be the voice of reason around here (lord knows I'm usually the first one in line to offend anyone) but still, this is pretty scary stuff.
I was going to say something similar...
me too!
But, we're a bunch of Canadians, we can keep things cool.
ok i will be the first to say something about the topic then. I say it depends the only time i see it as ok is if you are a victim of rape or if your young enough that your body isnt developed enough to handle having a child.
Ok - I'll go on the record. The ONLY situation when abortion is acceptable in my opinion is if the pregnancy endangers the life of the mother.
...or if I knock you up. :top:
About a year ago in South Dakota, there was a movement to pass a law banning all abortion, including in cases of rape and incest (only exception was if the mother would die.) In the fall, the public voted on this, and they overturned this ban.
When does life begin? An eight cell embryo has the potential to become a full body, but in itself, it is not viable. A fetus is not a human...it is a fetus..and different rights apply to it. Therefore, abortion is not murder...it is abortion.
Extracted from a paper I wrote last semester:
..."Laurie Shrage writes in Abortion and Social Responsibility the main tenants advocating abortion rights. She writes:
Moral and legal defenses of abortion typically appeal to some kind of
liberty right: (1) the right to be free from social coercion on matters of
personal importance, such as procreation, (2) the freedom to follow
one’s conscience on reasonably disputable moral matters, (3) freedom
from involuntary servitude, which encompasses the right to refuse to
provide help - even critically needed assistance – to others, and
(4) freedom from bodily invasion and injury. (Shrage 41)"
A woman, or any human, does not have to provide service to another, whether classified as human, fetus, or other.
Abortion is abortion.
The pole is rather bias to the pro-life position. All of the options appear to classify aboriton as murder (murder, depends, and acceptable if the mum wants...) Certinally the first two identifications classify abortion as being murder some of the time. As I mentioned, since a fetus is not considered a human, it cannot be classified as murder.
Going to sit on the fence here.
I think this is one of those MYOB situations.
I have no right, nor does anyone else, to tell anyone what decision they should make.
It would, I think, would not have been something that I could have done, (don't have to worry about it any more). However I am not sure having never been in that situation.
I think it is very important the we have the right to choose in the case of abortion. I keep trying to write a comment but I keep erasing them, nothing i type seems to say what I want to. I don't think abortion is wrong, but I don't believe that right should be abused.
Abortion by a rape victim is legal, isn't it? Thought I read about it before somewhere.
So yeah, it totally depends on the situation.
Ok... I'll say more about this topic.
When I was 6 weeks pregnant with Baby J. I had major complications with the pregnancy and the short of the story was that the doc at the hospital (where I was admitted) wanted to abort him. The doc wanted me to do a surgery which would have resulted in me loosing Baby J. He told me to 'cut my losses and try again'.
That doc would not even discharge me... so after a week I left the hospital against medical advice and went to a specialist who knew what he was doing. I went on complete bed-rest and did surgery when I was 5 months pregnant, but I have a happy and healthy baby boy now.
Personally, I believe it completely depends on the situation. If in the case where the pregnancy causes a life or death situation with the mother it should be up to the mother to decide. (She should not to be forced by any doctor to have an abortion.)
If in the case of rape or incest- it should also be up to the mother to decide.
I have issues when people choose to abort girls (or boys) solely because of their gender. And I am also against abortion in cases where the child has a disability.
I also don't think that abortion should be the first line of birth control. There are so many birth control products out there that you can use condoms, oral contraceptive pills, the nuva ring, the ortho evra patch... you can even go on depo provera or have an IUD. Mind you that being said- any one of these contraceptive methods could fail- but if they were used at least the effort was made to prevent an unplanned pregnancy.
Depends on the country....
If you are refering to Canada...abortion is a legal practice in hospitals and clinics. Although accesibility to said hosipitals or clinics varies greatly depending on your geographical location.
What I noted in an earlier post was that in South Dakota law makers were trying to pass a bill that would make it ILLEGAL to abort in cases of rape or incest. This bill was turned down in the fall by voters.
I have more information at my other home which I will post when I return there.
I think the question is not whether Abortion is murder or not. It's more of a question on whether it should be il-/legalized.
This is kind of a touchy subject??? I think that the only time a woman should get an abortion is when she was raped! other than that have the baby and give it up for adoption, there are so many ppl out there that want kids and can't have them.
Julie that happened with me to, i to was pregnant with twins and i went into preterm labor and the twins also had TTTS ( where one baby get more blood than the other making one really big and on really small) in a nut shell a TEAM of doctors came in and told me that i should abort the pregnancy " i was still young i had the rest of my life to have kids" this was coming from a doctor that walked in with keys in her hand with a key chain on it that said worlds best mommy! Yah i told her to get the F*ck out of my room!
I'm gonna go for, that it depends on the situation
[quote=StarDancer;15135] This is kind of a touchy subject??? I think that the only time a woman should get an abortion is when she was raped! [quote]
"Proving" that one has been raped... difficult process. Only 10% of rape cases go to trial, and only 4% have the result of guilty. Trials are an incredibly difficult thing to go through---if it comes up as aquittal...does that mean you can no longer get an abortion. Also, trails take a long time to go to court.
Also, what "constitutes" rape. What if drugs/alcohol are involved... What if the woman is in an abusive situation, and the only "sex" she knows "is rape". Would this include statuatory rape?
Suppose this is getting into another issue....
Kinda in awe that the dr would basically tell you to just cut your losses!! I'll say I wouldn't abort, although in the case of being a pregnant rape victim I think things are a bit different. I'm not sure many people would want their child to bring about terrible memories..
abortion is never acceptable. Even if a baby is the result of a rape. I know someone who was conceived from a rape and they are amazing, and I don't know what I would do without them.
I do agree with jelyana!
lol not a good subject!
Too touchy...
bumping an interesting topic
Using abortion as a form of birth control...NO!!!!!!
Abortion as a life saving technique for the mother...Maybe!!!!!!
Okay first I have to say please don't be mad at me for my opinion, but here it goes...
Probably if I had to vote on this issue, it would be Pro Choice.
Not because I personally would use this option, but there are so many children that live in severely neglectful and abusive homes, that I have to question how important is the quality of their little lives.
Someone had mentioned how many couples there are waiting to adopt children, so abortion should not be an option.
Well as an adoptive Mom who went through the ministry, I know how many kids are in the system and I have to disagree on your perception.
Most parents that want to adopt, want healthy newborns, without any openness (meaning relationship with the birth family)
Most of our Canadian children that have an adoption plan made are Special needs or Special placement, or have access orders in place, so they will probably never find a home to call their own.
FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome is very common with the children in care and is very unpredictable)
So, I guess my question is, should these children been sentenced to a life of neglect, poverty and abuse by their mother who never wanted them in the first place, or loneliness, and a huge sense of loss, living a life in foster care?
Not to mention the kids that are severely handicapped, that the parents didn't want and couldn't abort, or the children that are born with a terminal illness.
Once again what is the importance of quality of life.
Would you want to live your whole life not being able to function independently?
Now going back to foster care, I'm not saying that all foster homes are bad , but these kids that are waiting, desire a family to be a part of, more than anything else in the world.
Seriously, look into your provincial Ministry of Children and Family's or Children's Aid (what ever it is called in your province), and look at the majority of the children that are available for adoption.
Not many of these children are healthy, and if you are lucky enough to adopt a newborn, then this child's birth mother has done something wrong to her body, or she would be going to a private adoption agency.
This is where the waiting lists are...
Now, if there was a law to be able to control what these women are allowed to do to their bodies while pregnant, I would be all for that, but unfortunately there isn't.
Trust me, I am not proud of my choice on this, but what is the worse of the 2 evils
BTW
I hope that I haven't offended anyone
I'm not offended Harkatsmom. Personally I don't know how I feel. It is something I have never dealt with. The one issue I do take a strong stand to is using it as a form of birth control because a girl couldn't keep her legs closed,.... and Whoops look what happened.
i have to say it depends on the situation as well. if you are a young woman a victiam to rape than its hard for me to sit by and tell you what you are doing is wrong. if you have a child due to a rape can you love that child unconditionally or are you gonna be resentful, hurt and terrrifed each time you look at that child? i know a woman who got pregant because of rape and kept the baby and never regreted it and all i can think of what a strong person if i were in her shoes i don't think i would be able to do it.
Thanks Koala :sweet:
I hear you loud and clear about women using it as a form of birth control.
That truly makes me so sad in my heart.
I also realize that if it wasn't for adoption I would never have this opportunity to be a Mommy to my beautiful little angels.
But, I also know that even though abortion is legal, there are many biological mothers who will make an adoption plan...the stats prove it.
So, I guess I feel if abortion was illlegal, then we would have an even worse problem then we already do.
See, there are two valid points here. Like I said, I have never had to deal with this type of decision.
We have two good perspectives on this topic.
All I can say is that I need a 10-foot pole.
