I shop at a SDM near where I live. I've been happy with the products , cashiers, cosmeticians, and pharmacy team etc. I rarely return items. The only time is if I really don't like something or have a reaction. Plus I keep the packaging, receipt etc. About four weeks ago I returned a cosmetic item that I reacted to. The packaging, product, receipt were with me.The cosmetician said no problem, I filled out the slip and received my money. So three to four days ago I bought another cosmetic item. I hated it, lack of pigment, too shimmery etc. No testers for the product.I figured I would exchange it for an item I use all the time. Once again brought in the product, packaging, receipt. The cosmetician manager, who knows me by name, friendly, said "Your returning an item again?!" I said "Yes, I wasn't happy with the product, too shimmery, however I would like to exchange it." She said "Okay" but I could tell she didn't seem pleased, acted glum about it. I did the exchange and carried on my way. I almost felt like she wasn't too happy about returns. She's always been nice and friendly, unless she was having a bad day? Anyone else experience this at SDM?

No, I haven't experienced this when returning product (the only time I have returned is in the cosmetic department). My experience in the past has been like your previous/nicer experience went. Anytime I try something new (mainly skin care items) I am kindly reminded to keep my receipt in case of any reaction so that I can return/try something different. That is a big part of the reason I shop there, I feel comfortable with the service/care I am given. Sorry you had an icky experience... maybe she was having a not so great day?

That's what I thought, much less take it back because you didn't like it.

What is it to her if you are returning the item again? She's not covering the loss out of her own pocket, is she?!?

I asked another cosmetician at the same Shoppers if I don't like it, can I bring it back, she said yes. Another one that filled in when one of them was sick, said only if you have a reaction.

The two items I returned were different products. One was skin care, second one was makeup.

Me neither. I thought you can only return things which they can resell or the life brand items!

Each time you return cosmetic, it's a lost to the store, they paid the cosmetician commission when they sale cosmetic, but when people return they can't take the comission back, so I was told.

I bought lot of cosmetic in SDM and rarely return anything, I simply just ask for sample first and tried before I buy, don't wanna cause any problem to myself or store!

I don't think I would ever return something used and opened ever unless there was somethimg wrong with it. I don't thimk it's typical for people to return something because they don't like it so the reaction doesn't surpass me too much. I would maybe contact the product company first?

Plenty of drugstores in the US offer a similar options with very lenient return policies. You can even return lipstick if it is the wrong shade for you.

No, I haven't had such experience. But I would never return an opened item due to personal taste. It is common etiquette. I only return it if it is damaged or completely unopened so they can put it back on the shelf. I can understand why they are not pleased. You are essentially opening their products and not purchasing them. They will have to destroy the item out of their expense. It is damaging to their business.

In the future, you should ask them to open one for sample before you purchase. If they can't do it, you can often get a sample from the manufacturer by calling them or emailing them. Please try not to do this again, it adds to the cost to their business which we as customers all have to pay for.

I'm sure the lady was upset because too many people abuse these rules. You don't sound like you are trying to rip them off, but I can see that some people might buy cosmetics to use them once and then return them. Keep repeating at different stores to get free make up forever...

Wow, it sounds like a lot of people here haven't worked retail and don't know how returns and write-offs actually work. In most places, when an item that is not in saleable condition (used) comes back, the item is written off as return to vendor and there is really no loss to the store. The company that made it probably only spent 1/50th of the actual retail price to make it, so the occasional thing coming back isn't devastating to them either.

If a person makes commission, they don't get it taken away because the person returned the item. Commission is based on SELLING an item, not whether it doesn't come back, and it's not the cosmetics lady's fault if something breaks you out or you return it for whatever reason.

If a store has a return policy that allows you to return items due to them not working for you, USE IT. It is dumb and against the entire money-saving way of life to keep something that doesn't work or gives you a reaction.

Personal taste is a perfectly fine reason to return something, if you're not satisfied with the quality or performance of a product you absolutely SHOULD return it. You are not "essentially opening their products and not purchasing them", you're purchasing a product and feeling that it doesn't live up to the standards set for it, so you're returning it. There is nothing wrong with that.

It doesn't hurt a gigantic company (store or manufacturer) to have a couple write-offs. The only returns that hurt the company are thieves 'returning' something they've stolen, or people otherwise scamming by using part of a product, returning it, buying again etc., and THAT will make prices of things go up. A person legitimately returning an item they do not like is not wrong.

TC, I would just disregard her reaction. It's probably nothing, and there's nothing wrong with returning something that doesn't work for you.
