I've decided to "up my ante" wrt Heart and Stroke this year. My mil had a stroke 10 years ago and it has compromised her health ever since. My dear mom passed away from complications of a sub-dural hematoma which couldn't be treated directly because of her other Heart - related challenges. The stories of how H&S has helped people of ALL ages - even babies are inspiring. Their theme this year is "Make Death Wait!" The most threatening cause of death for women is heart attack and if you watched Rosie O'Donnell on Christmas Eve on TV - you'll realize that women's symptoms during a heart attack are usually much different than men. Women are more likely to "ignore" the symptoms and, as a result, have more damage done before they seek help.
So, I have taken on the role of Canvasser "Captain" as well as canvassing this year and have the job of encouraging and supporting 20 volunteers.
Today, I phoned all of them to remind/inform them about an upcoming meeting the first week of Jan. where they can pick up their canvassing kit and get some more information about the canvassing job. Getting out in the snow in the coldest, snowiest month of the year takes a certain kind of dedication.
One lady let me know that her circumstances have changed and she won't be able to canvas, so I'm going to have to see if I can find a replacement for her. Students can volunteer to get part of their "volunteer" time in (secondary students in Ontario have to put in --hmm - I think 14 hours of volunteering time during their highschool career so that they can graduate.)
So, I'm off on another adventure! I'll keep you posted. People who collect $500 or more have their name put in to win a I-Pad - so there's some incentive. I plan to put together a little "incentive" of my own - maybe a Timmies card for the most collected (per household).
