long story short -- I had 7 days left in my 1 yr warranty and my notebook wouldnt work.. Wouldnt turn on -- not happening. So I am waiting for it to be redelivered to me today after being repaired. I called ACER and they said they have replaced the entire hard drive and ac adapter. I understand the *importance* of a hard drive, but is this normally an expensive repair? If I had to pay out of pocket would this cost alot?

I'm not sure how much a hard drive is for a laptop, but I know you can buy a 1 Terabyte (1000 Gigabyte) hard drive for around $100 for your desktop computer. I can't see laptop hard drives being way more expensive?

My MacBook had a "mechanical error" a few months ago and they had to replace the hard drive -- I paid nothing but It would've cost me around $200 had it not been mechanical. Word to the wise, Back up everything. I lost tons of important documents.

Under warranty it should cost nothing, but remember that out-of-warranty repairs not only cost for hardware but also for labour. There is often a flat tiered repair fee that is charged for different categories of work done, and that is the cost you pay regardless of whether the individual part is cheaper.
If your unit is out of warranty, usually replacing a hard drive yourself is a relatively easy procedure. You can find good prices on portable computer hard drives from vendors such as Tiger Direct or NCIX.com. You will of course have to reinstall your operating system and all hardware drivers as well.
I work in Tech Support, and I cannot loudly enough stress the importance of having a backup plan for your data. When a hard drive dies, only rarely is there forewarning.
As well, when you send your computer in for ANY service, back up your data first. Repair depots do not guarantee your data's safety and often they will have to erase the hard drive and reinstall the operating system to return the unit to specs and for testing. Repair centres also do not do data recovery if you do not have a backup.
